Ulster Bank customers still receiving warning letters

Two people contacted TheJournal.ie yesterday after receiving warnings about missed loan payments and failed direct debits.

OVER 14 DAYS since Ulster Bank’s catastrophic technical problems began, customers are still experiencing new problems as a result of what has been described as an appalling and exasperating situation.

TheJournal.ie has learned that a number of Ulster Bank clients have received warnings about missed direct debits and loan payments as recently as yesterday.

In a letter received by mail on Wednesday, one customer – who would like to remain anonymous – was told that a failure to make further payments on his loan may result in him being found in breach of their agreement.

It read:

Dear M******,

I refer to loan no. Xxxxxxxxx, payment of €X due 29/06/2012 has not yet been received. If you have made payment since this date please ignore the contents of this letter. Failure to make further payments may result in you being in breach of your loan agreement & may be subject to interest accrued. If you are having difficulties you should contact our office on the number listed below quoting the reference no. at the top of this letter & please have all documentation to hand.

As this will enable us to deal with your queries more efficiently.

The recipient told TheJournal.ie that he was worried as he had not yet been able to contact the bank to ensure he could ignore the letter. He also said he would seek to confirm his credit rating independently as he could not “leave something so important to chance”.

A similar story was highlighted by another commenter yesterday:

To my consternation, when I got home today I got a letter from [Ulster Bank] saying they are charging me a penalty fee for an unprocessed Direct Debit. I was so amazed that I wrote a simple letter back to the concerned dept, letter which am going to put in the post before 5:30 today, making sure they will receive it tomorrow. In that letter I simply quote their reference and my name and account number and in the body I simply wrote “I’m having a GLITCH”.

The revelations come as Ulster Bank bosses prepare to face questions from an Oireachtas Committee about the ongoing debacle today.

It is expected that the senior representatives will make a statement about recent events before the floor is opened up to questions from the Oireachtas members. The committee is made up of 21 TDs and 6 Senators.

Yesterday, the same group met with Central Bank representatives who said that Ulster Bank must compensate anyone who incurred costs and charges because of the disruptions. Bernard Sheridan, director of consumer protection at the regulator, also called RBS and Ulster Bank’s contingency plan “appalling” and “exasperating”.

You’re legally entitled to invoice them & charge interest (at ecb + 6%) for your time in sorting matters out.

You probably won’t get it, but the simple fact is you can & should do it & then spend some time chasing it up.

The sad fact is that the bank like all banks will not be held liable. You can be sure there are terms and conditions which well be used to technically absolve the bank of any direct liability.

Each customer needs to make a rational decision: is the service from the bank helping or hindering them?

If it is the latter then begin the process of finding a new bank. But be prepared for obstacles. You can be sure all of the banks will really together to prevent customer power taking over.

    • it’s not that hard to close your account Bruce. Open new account in another bank, give those details to your direct debits. Close your old account and get money in bank draft, lodge bank draft in new account. Job done.

    • Anyone I know who is with this bank are saying they’re leaving once they get their money sorted!! Mass exodus I’d imagine!!!!

    • They’re in a bit of a mess now. If they suddenly fix that they’re in a bigger one – a massive run on deposits. This problem will be dealt with gradually over a period so as to ameliorate the effect of sudden mass withdrawals.

    • They are the only bank in Ireland that wont charge you for taking out money, and/or forching you to hold over €2000 in the account. I’m going to stay with them, to see what they’ll cough up, apart form platitues and apologies about customers. Staff are sound though, and sure its like everything else, a necessary evil, until we can all just get along, share and be good to each other.

    • I would like to give you a thumbs up Nicholas however it might seem that I ‘liked’ your plight, we are in the exact same boat with a second salary due today and it is also in limbo somewhere along with the first salary of two weeks ago. It’s not good enough. My mistake on believing the bank when they said it was just a ‘glitch’ that would be fixed in a day or so, well I won’t be waiting for a third wage to disappear, bye bye UB!

  • This is going on too long! How are they going to compensate credit cards and other missed payments via other banks? AIB said on the phone yesterday I will be charged late fees etc ! ulster bank need to tell us what their plan is for all concerned! Horrible that customers are receiving letters from the same bank about late fees!!!n

  • At least you’re receiving love letters from the bank, sign that you’re current account still exist, as for me almost since day 1 this current account of mine vanished into thin air (online, ATM, branch), maybe it was in need of holidays like me :P

  • Could we please see the exact line of code that caused this ‘glitch’?

Could I further add: don’t expect the central bank to be of help. It is merely the retirement home for faithful department of finance gnomes.

If regulation really applied ulster bank would have had its license to operate removed – as is the norm in other countries.

The silence from the state is incredible but sadly not surprising. It is evident who calls the shots – the banks not the state.

  • I have a loan with ub and that hadn’t been taken out even though it was due two weeks ago! Also beware if you have loans/mortgages with other financial institutions! Rang ebs today about our mortgage that is due to come out on the 7th. Ebs said it will show on my account as a returned direct debit (and I will be charged) then they will try again on the 15th (I will be charged again) and if it isn’t paid, unless I have a letter from ub saying its their fault it will show up as arrears on my account. Not happy at all

  • Ulster Bank is broke.

  • You can be sure that everybody will be getting charges applied to their accounts as these are generated automatically. UB will have to reverse them as per their public statements. God love them when those charges start hitting people – Joe Duffy will have to come home early from his holidays!

  • I will be handing them a letter going something like this:

    Dear Bank Manager
In view of the inconvenience and loss of confidence caused by the debacle, how much are you willing to pay into my account to stay with Ulster Bank?
You know how much my business is worth to you; your answer will determine my response.
    yours etc.

  • I’m quite sure these letters were sent automatically as mentioned above but common sense and a proactive member of staff would know to cancel this process to avoid further embarrassment for Ulster Bank. Like when Anglo went bust I am sure the only ones getting it in the neck are the poor saps working the counters!

  • i think it’s amazing you can’t use your account or pay direct debit but there nothing affecting there computers sending out letters. i think it’s a joke i don’t have an account and being affected but would close my account well before now

I would not be surprised if they were taking their time with it.
It would be one way to loose enough customers that they can then decided to shut up shop here.
They are after all the only back not being backed by the state.

  • Yesterday Vodafone DD had not gone through thankfully when I phoned them they were very understanding and put a note on my account to say I was with the ulster and to take the money next month. My mums Sky subscription DD has not gone through either but they say if they don’t get their payment they will cut the service off. I contacted Ulsterbank on twitter and got a tweet back directing me to a site ref dd that they are working with other banks and this is what it says “We would like to reassure our customers, and those of other banks, that we are working with other banks, service providers, insurance and utility companies to ensure that, as a result of this issue, customers will not be without their services, will not be permanently out of pocket and will not have their credit record affected.”

    • Oh… Mail to creditor. Ulster bank are part of rbs, they had three exact same glitch when they tried updating their system. Any idea how they’re doing with it? Not hearing much in the news about them. I know they worked throughout the weekend 2 weekends ago to sort out issues. Weird seeing banks open on a Sunday.

  • I switched to Ulster Bank in the middle of May because of AIB’s introduction of fees. According to Ulster Bank, all my direct debits would be switched over within 7 working days. I picked a date that was 8 working days before my next direct debit. That direct debit wasn’t switched over in time.

In early June I decided to apply for an Ulster Bank credit card. The application required me to submit a statement from the account the bills would be paid from, so I tried to order one from Ulster Bank online. I kept getting the message “service temporarily unavailable”. I phoned Ulster Bank and they promised to send me one within 5 working days. They never did.

    And now this.

It’s enough to make me wonder how Ulster Bank have managed to even stay in business all these years. I don’t think I’ve ever in my life dealt with a less competent company.

The letters are automatic, they’re even stuffed into envelopes automatically. It’s an oversight, get over it.

As for the credit rating being affected, most peoples are anyway. The quicker you get over trivial matters, the better.

It’s a mammoth screwup, but it’ll be fixed & the sun will continue to rise & set.

    • It is NOT a trivial matter, when you look at how many people were affected in so many ways it’s a massive inconvenience and not everyone’s credit rating was screwed to begin with. I said this yesterday, it is highly likely that people will have to go through their own accounts, direct debits, credit cards etc find out what fees or charges they incurred, then run their own credit check to see if its been affected, then they will have to chase UB themselves for the ‘compensation’ mentioned in the news yesterday. Not trivial at all.

    • ou812 is that your ub employee number.. its not a trival matter at all, i agree with you on 1 thing it is a major screw up.. will it be fixed?? but even if or when it is people’s stress will not be over. chasing ub to sort out accounts, missed loans, bills, late fees and missed mortgage payments. why should they when they are not at fault here!!

get over it.. I dont think so..

No, I don’t work for them, I do bank with them & I have to go to the UK for two weeks. I have a visa debit card with them (no credit card), called them yesterday & they told me that I can use the card with a “free” overdraft facility on it for the duration.

It’s a major inconvenience, but that’s all it is. Nobody’s dead, it will be sorted out.

I’ve had too many stresses in my life to let something like this get on top of me.

The world & it’s mother know there’s issues with the bank. People will wait to get paid, credit reports will be fixed. Let go of the problem before it “owns you”.

My mother was diagnosed with cancer this week & is having emergency surgery Monday.

      // send fail

… Maybe it’s just the wealthy or the less well off who can say this (I fall into the latter)

      “it’s only money”

Wouldn’t care if I was stuck without funds for a year if it meant my mother was cancer free.

      It’s all about perspective.

    • im sorry for your mam and i hope she recovers well. its an awful thing to go through as a family.

and i really dont mean to sound callous, but for some people there weekly wage is their perspective, and putting food on the table for their kids. Your priority is mother and so it should be, but like i said for others its feeding looking after their families.

I really dont want to sound rude, my comment about your employee number was meant as a joke, and i do wish your mother well.

  • I was in yesterday and asked the girl who was very nice to be fair when the problem would be fixed and she said in the next few days. I then asked “Is that for real or is it bullshit?” and she said “well maybe the 16th”. I feel sorry for the staff as they have to put up with the ignorance and mistakes of the higher up arseholes who can act as they like as they know they wont for most part have to face the public or be reprimanded. The 16th though? What the fxxk? Im outta that joke shop bank.
