Over 500,000 potentially affected by loyalty scheme breach

An initial inspection report has found that the names, addresses and other details of some 1.12 million clients have also been compromised.

Updated 21:56

THE OFFICE OF the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has said this evening that the credit card details of over 500,000 people across Europe may have been compromised in the Loyaltybuild breach.

In a statement this evening, the ODPC said a preliminary inspection report has confirmed that full card details of over 376,000 customers were taken, of which 70,000 were Supevalu Getaway customers and more than 8,000 were AXA Leisure Break customers.

Details of an additional 150,000 clients were potentially compromised.

The inspection report has also confirmed that names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of some 1.12m clients were also taken. The ODPC said initial indications are that these breaches were “an external criminal act”.

The commissioner’s office said it will now fully assess the findings of the inspection and will be making a number of recommendations to Loyaltybuild. A follow up inspection will also be carried out.

Companies are not supposed to keep credit card details. It’s bordering on illegal and is against the rules controlling them. Anyone found with someone’s details after the transaction has gone through should be heavily fined.

No it depends on the type of transaction, eg. Where there is multiple installments.
However they must explicitly warn you and ask your permission to keep the details beyond the current session/transaction.
For example paypal can keep your cc details, if you so wish

That is very incorrect. Companies can legally hold your credit or debit card information. How they hold it and treat it is a different matter.

Holding data like this is subject to PCI DSS compliance.

I have no cash. I have no credit. My response to the Government’s austerity measures and all of the taxes is extreme frugality. I don’t have much option. Car, VHI and Sky and club subscriptions are gone.

Credit is a drug. Spend less and there is less VAT exposure. I consume less and less, the luxuries are gone but it is people, friends and family who count. Things don’t count. It is more environmentally responsible to consume less.

The Government is pursuing an intentional deflationary and zero girth policy under the direction of the Troika . I have got the message at last. The Government Is dedicated to ensuring hat we only spend on absolute essentials. So be it.

Just rational and avoiding the misery of credit. We have to adapt to reduced circumstances. It reminds me what is truly important and joyful in life. A more sustainable and modest lifestyle is actually no harm for those of us who have been financially damaged by the recession.

For those who have loads of money, enjoy it.

I’d have to agree Peter. I’ve taken the same route in some respects. I even stopped smoking cigarettes recently and switched to ecigs {and one of my primary motivators was the Government excise, contemplating home brewing rather than giving them a cent.

My old van will actually run on vegetable oil and I’m researching how to make the switch from diesel over to it. I can source the fresh veg oil at 50 cent a litre and I’m assuming it’s more environmentally friendly than diesel, but I don’t know for sure. Either way, I’ve cut my mileage from avg 18,000 miles per annum to 5,000 per annum last few years.

I also recycle everything, and I mean damn near everything I can. As of 2 years/winters ago I’ve stopped buying coal or indeed any fossil fuels for my fires. I have 3 stoves that I run morning, noon, and night. I source and cut the timber myself, all of it.

This spring I intend to use my substantial garden – about two thirds of an acre – to become as near as self sufficient food wise as I can. Researching it at the moment as I’m new to growing certain vegetables I’ll need. Veg is so cheap it would be far easier, and perhaps as economical to simply buy it. But it’s not the point.

    Any other suggestions welcome.

Luke, that is both resourceful and impressive. I have looked at cutting back on the bigger ticket items but I have a lot to do to catch up with you.

What appeals to me is that many frugality measures are also environmentally responsible and healthy. There may be virtue, small scale virtue, but virtue nonetheless in scaling back. The high growth and high consumption economic model may not be sustainable in the longer term. The financial collapse and the data security failures may be stress lines in a collapsing economic system.

Human beings are adaptable and I’m only at the start of adaptation.

Oddly enough, avoiding high tax consumer items is a useful guideline for a better style of living. I think that your measures are sensible and well worth copying. So far, mine are just cutbacks. I now need to look into positive measures such as yours.

    Well done.

And btw Peter, I too was hit badly during the crash, I too cut up the credit card, and I too am learning and enjoying adapting to this new healthier, more family centric, simple life.

I still have a big outstanding loan, but I managed to come to an acceptable arrangement with my credit union. My credit rating has gone from outstanding to junk these last few years. That’s my only real concern, and it gets to me from time to time.

Perhaps I can turn that around in time, I don’t know. I don’t know how one turns it around in the first place.

Either way, life’s too important to be bothered with all that shit.

Luke, it is a breath of fresh air to hear you say that and to hear of your practical suggestions. I suspect that your outlook and way of thinking may become mainstream sooner than later.

A lot of people are immune to the recession and still have loads of disposable income. They can luxuriate in complacency and smugness. Others of us are compelled to adapt and it allows those who are materially comfortable to sneer at us and to enjoy their good fortune.

It’s a great way to live Peter. It truly is.

I never realized before the enormous kick I get out of cutting up timber to keep the house warm. There’s something primitive, yet incredibly natural, to my senses in doing it. Something chemical going on in my brain I suspect. It’s addictive and it feels right to me. I no longer flick a switch to heat the house – even though I have a switch I haven’t used it once in two years.

So many things have changed in my day to day life, 90% of them for the better. This crash has done me more good than harm on many levels. I could go on and on. It;s opened up the door to so many new, and simple, experiences for me.

I’ve finally figured out that the key to happiness for me is simplicity. The more simplistic I keep my life, the happier I am..

Luke, I agree. My life is simpler, more basic but there is a simpler contentment. I know exactly what you mean about cutting logs and getting down to real tasks instead of mindless consuming.

There are bonuses and advantages. It has opened up a new outlook on my part and, for sure, I derive far more from simple free pleasures.

I would not have imagined 5 years ago that I could think this way . I have lost weight, am a little fitter and less driven.

Simplicity improves life. I don’t have to figure out what luxuries I might buy. I can’t afford any. But oddly enough, I no longer need these things. Addiction to consuming eases off and disappears.

Many thanks for sharing the ideas. I better sign off before Willie gets too excited. I could visualise his red face and his laboured breathing. Lol!

Luke, I see that there are a few sensitive souls out there who dislike any criticism of Axa or Supervalue.

The fact is that cash does present some advantages in confidentiality, control of spending, cheapness of transactional costs and independence.

Going against the norm in Ireland is unpopular. We must follow the majority view, buy into the mainstream and not evaluate what we are doing.
