Liam Lennon Screengrab

This Roscommon man sells fruit juicers online and has been surprisingly successful

Juicers? Notions? Apparently not.

STARTING A BUSINESS in Ireland these days is tough, of that there is no doubt.

A decline in consumer spending, stubborn rental rates and a lack of credit for many businesses is making would-be entrepreneurs hesitant to enter the market.

Liam Lennon did just that in 2010, when he and his wife Sarah started Juicers Ireland, an online company that sells, you guessed it, fruit juicers.

Irish people are sometimes a little wary of what we might see as luxury (or notiony) consumer electronics, but Liam says that Irish people are positive about the site and the health products sold on it.

In fact, Liam was invited to speak at this years DMX Dublin digital marketing conference about building a viable digital business.

“Our customers are very supportive of the business. People really like to  buy from an Irish company, so the fact that we’re Irish-owned and operated has worked very well for us.”

Liam comes from an e-commerce background, but says that juicers were picked because of his passion for health and fitness. The website offers entry-level juicers from around €40 up to deluxe €400 models.

Liam says that he feels Irish people are starting to become more comfortable with online shopping.

“The health and wellbeing sector is continuing to grow.

“I think in the last 3 or 4 years, Irish people have become very well educated about shopping online.”

He says that he hopes to add products and websites to the company in the coming year, saying that the first four years have proved extremely successful.

I’m so sick of this condescending ‘notions’ phrase the Journal is so fond of.

Your readers are not stuck in 80′s eating potato waffles and baked beans. We are aware of the world outside the local parish.

Juicers have been around for many years and Irish people are well aware of their health benefits.

    Pfff.

Could you back up the statement that Irish people are wary of luxury consumer electronics or is just another opportunity for a journal item that mentions “notions”.

Yes, it’s no harm at all to see Irish small businesses getting a plug every now and then. I would have much preferred Liam wrote the article himself though so I could hear first hand from him. That’s no reflection on Paul, I’d simply prefer people running and starting small businesses were given perhaps a weekly article on the Journal.

I’ve been self employed since I was 23. I wish someone then had given me advice back then, because I made a lot of mistakes that could have been avoided easily. Most of those mistakes had to do with book keeping and keeping accurate accounts from day one.

    That’s an excellent idea Sam.

I was lucky enough to be placed on a mentoring scheme when I started my business, it was incredibly helpful to me and I learnt a lot from it in particular how to identify and target specific markets, basic book keeping, and composing a comprehensive business plan.
But this was pre-recession, not sure if its available anymore.

Do the staff at the journal have a daily quota of the word ‘notion’ that they have to include in their articles?

They must be ancient history buffs at the Journal. ‘Notions’ comes from Latin originally . Cicero coined the word.

We are a nation of begrudgers. It’s not exactly headline news but the negativity towards this article is ridiculous. So what if it’s a shameless plug for an Irish business.. If it was an article about abandoned puppies finding homes people would still find something to moan about

It’s hard to see how neoteny is associated with consumer electronics. It’s usually These are neotenic traits in humans: flattened face, broadened face, large brain, hairless body, hairless face, small nose, reduction of brow ridge, small teeth, small upper jaw (maxilla), small lower jaw (mandible), thinness of skull bones, limbs proportionately short compared to torso length, longer leg than arm length, larger eyes, and upright stance.
