THE LATE Adam Yauch, member of hip hop group the Beastie Boys, specified in his will that his music and image may not be used in advertising – ever.
The will, filed earlier this week at Manhattan Surrogate court in New York, read: “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”
The pioneering musician left his $6.4 million (€5.2 million) estate to his wife Dechen Yauch and their13-year-old daughter. It also gave the right to sell and manage his artistic property to his widow, reports the BBC.
The Beastie Boys gained global fame in 1986 with their track “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)”, and their debut album “Licensed to Ill” became the first ever rap album to hit No1 on the US Billboard 200.
After news of his death broke, co-founder of the Beastie Boys label Def Jam, Russel Simmons, paid tribute to Yauch – saying:
Adam was incredibly sweet and the most sensitive artist who I loved dearly. I was always inspired by his work.

I’m honestly not trolling here, but surely allowing his music to generate revenue from ads and for him to absolutely insist that the money go to a cause would be far more admirable than not taking that opportunity at all for the sake of his principles in music.
