Which Irish paper has just been named European Newspaper of the Year?

Is it your local?

EDITORS AND STAFF at the Mayo News are celebrating tonight after the local weekly paper was today given the honour of European Newspaper of the Year for 2014.

Managing Editor Neill O’Neill earlier described his “great pride” at hearing that the newspaper had beaten 193 titles from 27 countries to be named the continent’s top local paper.

For an independent newspaper from the west of Ireland to be singled out is no small feat, and one we are all justifiably proud of.
We now share this award with all our readers and advertisers, as officially the best local newspaper in the whole of Europe.

The Westport paper also becomes the first in history to win the award twice, after its victory in 2007.

In its statement today, the award jury praised the “regularly updated” content and design of the Mayo News, as well as the “spacious double pages” in the sports and local sections.

The prestigious award will be presented at a ceremony in Vienna next May.
