Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will "fight to protect" Muslim rights

The founder said that Facebook is a “peaceful and safe environment” for everyone and urged people not to “succumb to cynicism”.

THE CEO OF Facebook has lent his support to the Muslim community saying the service would “fight to protect” their rights.

In an update on his page, Mark Zuckerberg called for people not to feed into fears in light of both the Paris attacks and the mass shooting in California last week.

“My parents taught me that we must stand up against attacks on all communities,” wrote Zuckerberg. “Even if an attack isn’t against you today, in time attacks on freedom for anyone will hurt everyone”.

If you’re a Muslim in this community, as the leader of Facebook I want you to know that you are always welcome here and that we will fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you.

Zuckerberg’s comments come after Donald Trump’s call for a “total and complete” block on Muslims entering the US. Trump’s comments were widely criticised by members of the democratic and republican parties and the White House said he had “disqualified” himself from being US president.

“The hate of some can make it easy to succumb to cynicism. We must not lose hope,” said Zuckerberg. “As long as we stand together and see the good in each other, we can build a better world for all people”.
