YOUTUBE COULD SOON be removing music artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, and Adele after a number of independent record labels refused to sign up to the licensing terms for its new music service.
Google, which owns YouTube, has been working on a music subscription service for a number of months, and is said to be blocking videos in a matter of days to ensure that all content on the site follows its new terms.
Speaking to The Financial Times, YouTube’s head of content and business operations, Robert Kyncl said the service will be launched later in the year.
The company is planning to do internal testing first over the coming days, giving it the opportunity to improve the user interface and quash any bugs before it’s released to the public.
According to Kyncl, record labels representing 90% of the music industry have signed up to the new terms. The remainder artists will likely be blocked from the platform.
The new paid-subscription site will be part of YouTube’s main services. Users will be required to pay a monthly fee to be able to watch videos or listen to music without adverts. They will be able to do this on any of their devices, even when they’re not connected to the internet.
YouTube attracts more than one billion monthly viewers, and has paid out more than $1 billion to the music industry through licensing deals. According to Kyncl, that figure is expected to double.

I can’t see this working out in googles favour. It seems that they’re trying to compete with the likes of Netflix and spotify. I personally use YouTube quite a lot for listening to music and (you guessed it) watching videos. I don’t feel that there’s anyone on YouTube who’s producing their own content that’s worth paying for, I don’t think the content has reached that standard just yet.

It was only a matter of time before this corporate spy tool started to demand payment for it’s services. Censorship is also just around the corner.
Yeah….. how dare a company charge for its service . Everything should be free……. As for censorship a private company can show whatever they like on their website. Come on you start a rival company and make no money off it
The honeymoon period is coming to an for a lot more of these services that we have been taking for grantit for so long. You will still get your free services but they will be bombarded with adds.
They do make money from adverts and selling information. That’s why it’s free

So Universal and Sony looking for more money yet again. This won’t last long, Americans certainly won’t take to it and I’m sure the Asians have already found a way around it. I’m happy enough to stick to my 8tracks and although it might lose the YouTube songs they still have a lot of originals playing through soundcloud
So many other ways to access video and music content online without paying a penny.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s not as if it’s losing money.
