YouTube videos are going to look amazing from now on

The site has quietly rolled out 60fps videos, which will allow for smoother, higher-quality videos.

IF YOU THINK the quality of YouTube videos is pretty good right now, then prepare to be amazed.

Earlier this year, YouTube announced that it would introduce 48 and 60fps videos for more “motion-intensive videos,” but hadn’t revealed anything beyond that. Now it’s rolling out support for the service and allowing users to upload videos with a smoother frame rate.

First spotted by Kotaku, the service can be activated provided you bump up the video quality to 720p or 1080p, and are using a HTML5 compatible browser (e.g.: Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer).

For those watching funny videos and the like, you won’t notice much of a change, but for games and movie trailers, it makes a major difference as the action is a lot smoother than before.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the majority of 60fps tests that have started recently involve videogames as the faster frame rate suits the medium more. It also helps that it looks amazing, and matches the same quality you would get if you were playing it in your living room.

And for those wondering how this would translate to a movie trailer, look no further.

It will help so much when watching Lets Play videos. It can be painful sometimes even in 720 or 1080, the quality of the game just coming across as jumpy and slightly pixelated. Unfortunately, I imagine that your internet will have to be really incredibly fast just to use it.

It’s okay for video game footage but it looks awful for films, for example The Hobbit movies that were projected at 48fps in some cinemas.

I was under the impression that the human eye couldn’t pick out that kind of rate and it was only useful if you were playing something back as a slow-motion replay.

It’s funny that youtube has 60fps but many next gen titles still can’t reach that mark on the Xbox One mainly but also on PS4

Sorry to be “that guy” but it’s wrong to simply say it’ll work on “internet explorer”. It won’t on the older versions. Better to say “the latest versions of….”.

Altogether:”pedantic Pat, and that is that”…
