End of an icon: The 'last ever' Windows has just been given a release date

It’ll still be around, but there won’t be any new product launches.

MICROSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED that the latest version of its Windows operating system will be available 29 July for computer and tablet users.

The new Windows 10 software will come as a free upgrade to people who already use Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and will be available in 190 countries.

Microsoft have said that there will be seven different versions of Windows 10 depending on what exactly customers are looking for. It will come pre-installed on Microsoft-compatible computers and tablets from July 29 and will be available for purchase later in the year.

The 29 July launch will also be the last major launch of a Windows operating system. One of its developers said last month that, instead of repeatedly luanching a new product, Windows update would be smaller and more frequent.

The move marks a major launch for Microsoft, after the relative failure of Windows 8, which was rolled out in 2013.

Windows / YouTube

Microsoft has high hopes for Windows 10, which it wants to see installed in a billion devices around the world by 2018. The idea is to win over app developers.

Windows 10 is expected to feature a common base with which developers will be able to build apps that work on smartphones, tablets, PCs and desktops, and even Xbox.

Ricki Brennan: 1.25% maybe in the mobile market. Windows still rules in all office PCs & has a big share in the server market.

It was the best move Microsoft could make. They’re effectively giving Windows away for free with their ’8.1 with bing’ for OEMs anyway. This will take the main headaches of Windows out of the equation, compatibility after upgrading to a newer version, and older versions no longer receiving security updates.

We’re not talking about Microsoft. Why? Because nobody cares.

I beg to differ. One judge made a decision which Irish people are disgusted with and are spreading the word through blogs and any median possible to embarrass/force the reversal of the decision.

We are not fools or sheep and making bold stupid statements like that will never make you a hero or anything more than a keyboard warrior. We do not let them walk all over us, i have brought my family including infants to every march we could get to. As a people we are well aware of what is going on and are disgusted. To be fair to the vast majority of the Irish media they are obeying the law and to do anything less disrespects the constitution you claim to hold so dear. In this day and age it’s far to easy post cryptic messages here yet not have to rocks to say it loud and clear. Spit it out or stop wasting my bank holiday. Keyboard sheep

Article says Windows 8 was rolled out in 2013 but it was released to public in 2012. I like it a lot, installed it when it was released and never went back to Windows 7. The 8.1 update was a help in ironing out some of the annoying features. A lot of people did miss the old Start Menu though, hence the popularity of Classic Shell.
