NINTENDO HAS REVEALED that the successor to its hit Wii console will be launched next year, but isn’t saying anything about what the new system will be able to do.

The Japanese company says it will show off a “playable” demo model of the new console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo from June 7th to 9th in Los Angeles.

Nintendo has sold 86 million Wiis since it launched in 2006. It caused a splash with its innovative motion-sensing controller, a setup since copied and elaborated on by the other major console makers, Microsoft and Sony.

Also today, Nintendo said its annual profit dropped for the second straight year as sales declined.

  • The power of the Wii is less the console and more the simple addictive games. It’s like the tetris phenomenon. Simplicity with fun goes deep with people. If Nintendo can take that to the next step In Wii2 it’ll be superb!

  • Excellent news, while many write Nintendo off as a console for kids the numbers speak for themselves, the Wii has outsold both the PS3 and the 360, while the DS sold over twice as many units as the PSP. The kid gloves are off, and with this new console bringing power to the table which exceeds that of the PS3 and 360 (about time, I know) they can move towards getting the major developers involved again and with better 3rd party support they might regain some of the older audience they lost over the past few years.

  • I’m not sure, there’s no power behind the Wii.

    • Well it’s certainly nowhere near the other two in terms of what it can produce on screen, I won’t debate that, but they’ve said the Wii2 is considerably more powerful than the PS3/360, and with talk of GTA 5 being a launch title (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=156124) I think they’ll be making up for lost ground quickly. They’ve also scrapped that online “friend code” system, so they’ve learned their lesson there too it seems

  • I stand corrected. My appologies.

    • Ah it’s all still up in the air anyway, it was only after the rumours were running wild that they actually admitted to having it ready to be shown off. There’ll be playable models at E3, and more specs will be released then, but either way it’ll certainly be an interesting thing to watch out for!

  • That is true, and the keypads with touch screens would be an interesting effect. Actually, that would be an all-round forerunner for any new future console lineups.

  • @ hank Scorpio – Obviously they would make it more powerful than PS3, but you fail to say that the PS3 is running on old technology. It would be safe to assume that it would be more powerful. But in all fairness, they say that they will release the Wii 2 next year, yet they haven’t released any specs or anything.

    Your argument is pretty vague.

    • “The system will be based on a revamped version of AMD’s R700 GPU architecture, not AMD’s Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3′s NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system’s CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster. The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, though it has not been determined whether that will be a staple feature.”
