Wonder who can see your Google Drive files? This will show you

Chances are there are a number of files you will have forgotten all about.

WhoHasAccess WhoHasAccess WhoHasAccess

GOOGLE DRIVE HAS one of the more popular cloud services out there (by virtue of most people having access to one Google service or more), but every time you access or share a document, you’re giving permission to someone or allowing them access to certain information.

WhoHasAccess allows you to scan your Google Drive account and find out who has access to files in your account as well as what content is available to everyone.

Once you’ve your account scanned – usually takes a minute or two depending on how much you’ve stored – you will be given an overview of everyone who has access to your account.

Chances are you won’t find anything malicious, but considering how often Google Docs are used to share information, you may come across a few permissions you forgot about and would like to remove, or people you would like to revoke access from.

The annoying part is you can’t revoke access through the page, you have to do it through Google Drive, but that’s a small price to pay for knowing who has access to what.

And for those wondering, the makers behind the service delete all information they collect and remove their access permissions within 24 hours, although you can remove it yourself through your own account permissions if you want.

So, I have to give this app my Google password and it will tell me what I can already tell from the file information?

This is not a great privacy tip. :-/

Not your password but permission to view your docs which they claim they’ll forget about after 24 hours.

It would be more worrying if you didn’t have to give it your password

Your own hard drive = no privacy too, though harder to get at, granted.

If someone wants some info about you, or some info you have, they can get at it no matter where it is if you’ve chosen to store it electronically. Back to the ‘aul biro and notebook if you’re so inclined.

Clearly not worried here though as everything I have is backed up on OneDrive. Though who the f is going to want to get at my lesson plans and that letter of complaint I sent last month.

You might not be far off with the biro and notepad. I read during the week that the German secret service have gone back to using typewriters since the NSA spying scandal. I wondered why they didn’t just disconnect their computers from the net, still quicker than typewriters, but plausible non the less.

Whatever about the app … anyone that Quintan has information shared with, we can all drop them an email and ask them how they feel about privacy!
