A BRITISH COMPANY has developed a way to bring cars and other vehicles to a stop without touching them.
The RF safe stop system, developed by technology company E2V, uses a radio frequency pulse to ‘confuse’ a vehicle’s electronic system, cutting the engine and bringing it to a halt.
The BBC reports that it can stop cars, motorbikes and other vehicles that have these features in place.
When the vehicle enters the device’s range, it causes the dashboard warning lights and dials to behave erratically, causing the engine to shut off.
The device has gotten interest from both the police and the military, and is one of several similar products trying to enter the market.
There are concerns that the device will have a negative effect on a car’s steering system or electronic brakes, but E2V says that the risks were lower than alternative methods.
Since the device works on vehicles with electronic systems in place, it means older vehicles will be unaffected.
Here’s the device in action.
