Five top execs ditch TV3 for new UTV Ireland

UTV Ireland, which is set to start broadcasting in early 2015, said recruitment is going exceptionally well.

FIVE OF TV3′s top executives are leaving the broadcaster to join the new UTV Ireland in senior executive positions.

UTV Ireland is set to start broadcasting early next year.

Yesterday it announced a number of appointments which include Daragh Byrne, currently TV3 Director of Sales, as Commercial Director and Joanne King as Direct Sales Manager, having held the same position for TV3 in Setanta Sports.

Paula McCarthy will be the Head of Sponsorship and Promotions, Daragh O’Halloran will be Head of Research for the station and David Townend will fill the role of Head of UK Sales. All three worked in similar positions in TV3.

Of the four other appointments announced yesterday, three of the executives have also worked in TV3 at some point in their careers.

Speaking about the announcement yesterday, John McCann, Chief Executive of UTV Media, said he was delighted to welcome such highly experiences and talented broadcasting individuals to the station.

He said recruitment is going “exceptionally well” and further appointments will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

Very poor article. Heaadline makes you think 5 have left TV3 to go to UTV Ireland but 3 of them “have also worked in TV3 at some point in their careers.”. Hardly ditching TV3 are they?

And please explain this: “having held the same position for TV3 in Setanta Sports” ?? How can someone hold the same position in TV3 IN Setanta Sports?

I was confused by this too. I think what the article meant was that apart from these five executives four others were hired, and three of these four had worked at TV3. I had to read it twice to get that. Not clearly written.

Tv3 is utter garbage. Programs that glorify gypsies awful behaviour, the estate, and many other shameful nonsense that I have thankfully forgotten. Ye I give out about RTE. Now that you mention it, every Irish station is embarrassing

Do you expect the GAA to move away their games for free.

TV3 are finished. The GAA took the only safe money available to them.

It’s more of a name change than a new TV station. UTV will eventually absorb TV3. Competition is great but like our radio stations, we have so many now that the standard is falling.

We could nearly scrap the tv licence carry-on then so, no point propping up a tv station in this day and age, unless of course you could use it for…..
Why not just scrap it, every household would have €160 to spend, save or pay down debt, surely this would benefit the wider economy

Oh, that’s a pity – I suppose we can just call the new channel TV3 II and then gouge the appropriate button off our remote controls.

    - I wonder were they lucky enough to have poached the person responsible for TV Twee gleefully and shamefully selling advertising on the back of recent tragic Irish murder cases?

At least tv3 is a bit more up to date than rte , it’s trying to aim at a younger kind of audience , unlike rte who’s audience aim is the over 60 ‘s

Are they calling the channel “UTV Ireland” or is that just a working title? It doesn’t sound very imaginative. Mind you I can’t think of a name… Channel 6 has been done and 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are taken
