BAI flicks the switch on for UTV Ireland

The station will begin broadcasting in January of next year.

UTV IRELAND HAS been granted a ten-year contract to broadcast to Irish audiences.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) gave the green light to UTV to begin transmitting to the Republic of Ireland terrestrial audience in January 2015. UTV Ireland will have exclusive broadcasting rights for ITV Studios programmes here, including Coronation Street and Emmerdale. These currently show on TV3, and their loss is likely to have a major impact on that commercial station.

The chairperson of the BAI, Bob Collins, said he believed UTV Ireland would bring “increased diversity of content” to Irish viewers. The BAI is familiar with UTV Ireland Limited as it already runs a number of radio stations in Ireland. These include Dublin’s Q102 and FM104, Limerick’s Live95, Cork’s 96FM/C103 and LMFM in Drogheda.

When UTV announced its plans to move into the Republic of Ireland TV space, its CEO John McCann said that it already employed 300 people in those radio stations and other media services. He said that he envisaged the new TV channel breaking even by the end of 2015, and moving into profit in 2016. It is hoped that 100 jobs will be created by the new station.

Hopefully they can create some decent original content. We really don’t need any more current affairs shows and anything other than the traveller-centric grot that TV3 serve up will be welcome.

I fear that it will just This Morning followed by Jeremy Kyle and then filler until its time to show the soaps. I hope I am wrong though.

So true if I see another traveler show I’m going to put my TV through the window. TV 3 really is woeful. The only things I watch on it are Vincent Browne and champions league.

Pretty much the only original content UTV NI produce is the news. So I don’t think UTV Ireland is going to be anything different. And their other programming will hardly be new to Ireland since it’s already on TV3 ant it’s all drivel. It’s a vehicle for generating advertising revenue.

I think this is going to be no different than the current UTV, bar a couple of republic based news items and an all Ireland weather forecast. We don’t need more of the same shite. We need something more challenging and different, like the early days of Channel 4.

Tv3 who rely on a lot of ITV content are doomed.

However unless UTV pay to get on the Sky EPG, they are too.

I don’t get why they are creating UTV Ireland-why not rebrand the current UTV station with HQ in Dublin and regional offices in Belfast, Cork, Galway and Derry. With an all island news and weather programme and then whatever other programmes they want to show. RTÉ is too Southern focused and I really think we need something new to add to the status quo.

Or the head quarters be based in belfast with a branch in Dublin as said above its only difference to UTV or ITV is that the news will cover things in the south. Either way ta ta TV3 as that was just an Irish version of UTV and without the soaps it will have little pulling power with viewers.
