Pics: This is what it will be like to use the iPhone 5

A beta version of iOS 6 has been released to developers and is expected to be launched fully on Apple’s latest update to its smartphone range.

NOW THAT WE officially know Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 to the world on 12 September, we’re still stuck with another week of rumours and speculation.

But! There are some things we know for certain, such as what Apple plans to do with iOS 6, the new operating system for iPhones and iPads that will likely launch along with the iPhone 5.

Apple released a beta version of iOS 6 to developers this summer, which we had a chance to play around with. For beta software, it’s actually incredibly stable, so you can get a good idea what it’ll be like when the final product launches this fall. Check out our screenshot tour below to see what’s new.

  • Here's the home screen. It looks just like it did before.

  • You'll notice a few changes in the main Settings menu. First of all, you can toggle Bluetooth on and off right up front.

  • There's also a handy "Do Not Disturb" switch. This feature makes it so your phone doesn't buzz or light up when you get a new notification.

  • There are also some advanced privacy settings. This menu will help you control what apps have access to your information.

  • Apple added Facebook integration to iOS. Let's sign in!

  • When you sign in to Facebook, you can sync your calendar events, photos, contacts, and favorite apps.

  • You can also send a tweet or Facebook update from the Notification Center. Let's try a Facebook post.

  • Type in your text, and tap "Post" to send to Facebook.

  • Apple completely redesigned the Maps app in iOS.

  • Neat! Our Facebook birthdays calendar loaded to the Calendar app.

  • Passbook is a new app that lets you make payments with gift cards. It also stores tickets to concerts, sporting events, and travel. Since we're using a beta product, there's no way to test Passbook right now.

  • The App Store got a major refresh. It's gorgeous.

  • Here's the new sharing page for websites. You can share links on Twitter, Facebook, and even Weibo. (Weibo is the "Twitter of China")

  • Type your message and your link will post to your Facebook account.

  • You can also store articles to read offline later.

  • The new Mail app has a few tweaks too. Let's check them out...

  • See that little star next to the name? That means a VIP is sending us a message.

  • You can set certain contacts as "VIPs," so their messages will appear in a separate inbox. This is good for the people you talk to often.

  • We set Dylan as one of our VIPs. Let's see what happens when he sends an email...

  • You can also upload a photo or video directly to a message. Tap and hold the empty space, then tap the arrows over to "Insert Photo or Video"

  • You now have new options when getting a call. Swipe the phone icon on the right to see what's new...

  • You can auto-reply with a text message or set a reminder to call the person back later. Let's send a message.

  • I have both S3 and a Iphone 4s (Iphone is my work phone) and both have there pros and cons. S3 has better screen and is easier to load music onto. Iphone is nicer to use, less buggy and better for Apps.

A lot of the differences are subjective so can fan boys on both sides just accept that people may prefer one over the other. The reason why the Journal publishs non news articles like this is that it whips fan boys and girls to a frenzy and gets lots of Page views and comments.

  • All of these features are on numerous other phones and have been for a long time! Apple always boast when they release something new for the iphone! New for the iPhone, but old for everything else

    Reply
    • The point is they are new features from apple for customers who use iPhone so of course we want to hear what they are , if they are new features for iPhone I don’t see the big deal that some are features other phones might have already , if you using iPhone your not using other phones ,and we get it – some of you don’t like apple but FFS plenty of people do because the stuff is pretty good , idiotic commentary like they want to make money is irrelevant , why in the name of Jaysus would they build a global business and not want to make money…

Apple bashing, the new Microsoft bashing. Gas. Wonder when Android is biggest (something I think will happen even though I personally prefer neither) will people move to bashing Samsung or HTC? Pretty sad people on here; like they’ve a personal stake in one or the other. Get a life it’s just hardware and software. Neither of which you had anything to do with creating.

  • @ Aidan. Never found Windows phones great (I’ve had two). Technically good but not very user friendly, but that’s just me maybe.
We’ve a Lumia at home. Again fiddly to use.
The new Lumia looks nice and it’s on Windows 8 so it might be worth checking out when it comes on the market.

As usual, all style no substance – still can’t group email contacts easily from phone which is a real pain if you use an iPhone for any kind of business use.

Can’t wait to swap my iPhone 4s for a new Nokia 920.

    • I wouldn’t mind it so much if they had a section devoted to technology along with news and sports. Articles about new games, new phones and new computers similar to the Nu.nl news app.

But posting only Apple related updates and the failures of competitors such as Nokia is very unbalanced on a solely news website.

Maybe adding a new section for tech articles is worth looking in to?

I don’t get the fan boy behaviour from either side – why argue over who has the best phone, it’s so pointless!! (it’s like people arguing over Nokia vs Motorola or Siemens way back when) people will always go with what they feel most comfortable with, less technically minded people will probably go apple because it’s simple and unless jailbroken it’s pretty much “on rails”, those with more tech sense will prefer android for its customisability and freedom.

Having said that, I too notice a very obvious bias toward apple here on the journal and agree a dedicated tech section would be welcome.

Also the maps have built in GPS turn by turn navigation based on the Tom Tom network… And the App Store is great you do not need to sign in to update your apps.. And when you install/ purchass and app it doesn’t kick you out of the App Store…. It’s simply pritty

  • I have to laugh at most of these comments. Talk about being sucked into the marketing (and that goes for people on both sides by the way). Every company out there exists to make profit and will do as much as they can to get you to part with it. They aren’t making these products for any other reason.

Realistically the difference between all of these phones are minimal. An adjustment here or there in using the interface. A couple of better apps on one that aren’t on the other. Ultimately anything you can do on one phone you can most likely do on the other. Stop believing the marketing people. Do you go out and buy washing powder based on the advertisements? I would hope not. So why would you then believe the same kind of marketing on an item that costs way more?

Are your lives that shallow and uninteresting that you need to define yourself by a piece of technology? If your life can really be changed simply by buying a new phone you need to do some serious reassessment of your priorities!

    Reply
    • Get off the high horse.

As someone who ran a business and learned quite a bit about marketing, i can assure you nearly every penny you spend is a direct result of marketing manipulation.

To put it simply, other people know more about why you buy a product than you even do yourself.

      Reply
    • Also, you’re the only one here talking about life changes as a result of a phone, no one else is.
We’re all just commenting because it’s an entertaining debate.

    • Who says technology can’t be art, just because you’re not interested in it doesn’t make those that are “shallow and uninteresting”.
Who here is claiming to define themselves on a piece of technology??
Anyone who’s really into the technology doesn’t give a crap about marketing, they’ll get dug into the specifications and judge each device on it’s merits!
They’ll then proceed to rip the piss out of everyone else who uses inferior technology. :-D
      All good.

I think apple fans are attracted to the “shiny shiny box”.

    • I have to admit, at present I’m trying to decide between the 4S, G3, or One X, and the thing that makes me second guess the android offerings is the handsets.

I read the CNet reviews to see which was best, they put all three on a level footing. Some features are better on one but another has different better features, and the third has its own strengths, levelling them out. They reckoned the only difference was personal preference.

Personally, I prefer the size with the androids, a slightly bigger screen would be nice. The S3 has expandable memory which is also a big plus. As far as the One X goes, depending on which site I view it’s either quad or dual core – I’m finding the lack of consistent information quite galling, also, the other half has a HTC – and as good as it looked for specs at the time, it’s got lots of stupid impracticalities that no one mentioned (like how the internal memory is low and most apps couldn’t be moved to SD card meaning it clogged up quick), plus the handset has several issues, such as the camera gets fogged up and the mic only works on speakerphone or when taking video. Plus photos with the flash look terrible (even though the camera is better than the 3GS one – mind you, it doesn’t have a flash!!), so this also makes me wary of the One X.

But the big thing was how they feel in my hand. Was playing with a friends S3 last night and it felt really cheap, like it could snap in your pocket. It was really light and almost slippy – I could see me dropping it a lot. It felt like a shop display replica without the weight inside..
I realise “light” is seen as a massive step forward but to me the weight lends it a more solid feeling.. When it’s too light it does *feel* cheap. I was leaning more to the S3 than the One X, but I really don’t like how it feels..

There’s things I don’t like about the 3GS I have now, but it has lasted me for 2 years with heavy usage, more than any other phone I have ever had has lasted. It’s been dropped, I’m sure it’s probably got some water damage, but the worst thing it does is slow down when it hits a certain percentage of capacity and that’s a processor issue because it’s running ios5. The phone itself only ever crashed when I tried to jailbreak it. And it’s never been off for more than an hour. My partners phone is 2 steps behind on android OS updates, and it’s newer than my 3GS which apple say will run ios6, so the fact that android is open source and theres several companies using it means that the phones seem to become obsolete quicker..

Still completely undecided though.. I don’t like that the 4s is the same size, I don’t like that most decent apps on iPhone are pricey. I don’t like the reliance on iTunes and the free one on 3 is 16GB just like the one I have now – if I go for that while it’s easy to transfer all my stuff basically all I’ll get is a different handset with a better processor and camera. I could wait on the iPhone 5, but if I do I’ll be waiting til the new year – no sense buying a new piece of tech til it’s been out and all the flaws have been identified and resolved first! (remember the antenna debacle with the iPhone 4?)..

They’re just phones – each one has a plus and a minus. People do tend to stick with what they know and I guess that predisposes them to having different expectations. Like my partner (who will be getting my 3GS when I upgrade) hates the way you can’t customise more with the iPhone homescreen – that really doesn’t bother me.

All this fanboyism.. It’s so pointless, the people who buy them because of the name on the handset are being quite silly. You should be choosing a handset based upon what you want to get from the phone, not who made it..

      Reply
    • First off, I’d say 99% of people buy their phones because of the capabilities, not the brand. In any case, about the phones – be under no illusions, the iPhone 4 cannot compete with the HTC ONE X or Galaxy S3, it’s old; if you plan on sticking with the iPhone you’d be mad not to wait for the iPhone 5 to come out.
Where you’re reading articles with some saying duel core and others saying quad core processors that’s because most of these phones have an international version and an American version, the American versions are dual core and the international versions are quad core. As far as I’m aware this is to do with a particular compatibility issue on certain American networks.
I spent months analysing the HTC ONE X and the Galaxy S3 on the run up to the S3 release. Once it came out and I played with it a bit I settled on the Galaxy S3 because I prefer the technology. I prefer the look and feel of the ONE X and I love HTC Sense but decided to give the S3 a go (a change is as good as a rest and all that).
It took me about a week or two to get used to the weight of the S3, and the slippery feeling, but once I got used to it it was fine.
interestingly enough, the ONE X and S3 are made from the same material, just with a different finish ( god only knows why Samsung went with the glossy finish, perhaps it was a cost thing. ).
The reason I settled on the S3 was the removable battery and the SD slot, the lack of these on the ONE X was a deal breaker. Also, the battery is bigger on the S3.
I have to say Touchwiz is an UGLY launcher, it’s like nobody at Samsung spoke to each other when developing widgets, they’re awful, no consistency, no effort put into the look or feel. Samsung could learn a lot from HTC in this regard. But I downloaded a couple of 3rd party launchers and eventually settled on Nova launcher, between that and replacing the standard Touchwiz apps I now have a very, very nice looking launcher and set of widgets.

Very happy with it now. I highly recommend the S3.

    • Thanks for your reply Paul.. I knew the American one was different because it mentioned it in the CNet article – what I meant was that meteor said its quad and 3 said it was dual (or perhaps the other way around) – that was where the confusion came from!! Certainly the 4s by comparison is old, but I got the 3GS when it was old too and like I said it served me well..
      Decisions decisions lol!

  • For all the repetitive comments stating that ‘Android has had that for years’ I think the point is that a large number of people have iPhones and aren’t in any mad rush to go out and change phone and OS but are interested in seeing what will be different on their phone. If Android had an update I’m sure people using that OS would be interested and I’d like to think I’d reserve my ‘but the iPhone’s had that for years’ comment.

Now I’m typing this from an iPhone. I like my iPhone. It’s a 3GS so realistically it’s a piece of sh!te by today’s standards BUT rather than go with the significantly better S3, I think (pending money) that I’ll switch back to the newer iPhone. Why? Jailbreak. I like my tweaks from the Jailbreaking community, I know most, such as SBSettings (swipe top of screen to get quick toggles for WiFi etc) are on Android but I prefer the look of them on the iPhone. That combined with the amount of money I’ve spent on apps….Wouldn’t want to lose it all!

Without Jailbreaking an iPhone, it’s no competition. I have my 3GS for 18 months now and the silent switch is fooked, as is the volume down button. Jailbreaking provides me with a fix through apps but Apple would have wanted me to upgrade! I find the 3GS poorly built.

Having said that, I’ve had Samsung in the past and I never liked them, I hated my previous Samsung phones. Ive played with the S3 though, quite liked it, still not sure…
