AROUND 188,000 UPC customers are set to get the digital television provider’s on-demand service from the middle of next week.

Customers in cities such as Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford are set to benefit from the additional roll out of the new catch-up service from next Wednesday.

The on-demand service has already been operating for customers in Dublin since May with viewers able to catch-up on some programmes that they may have missed in the last seven days on RTÉ or TV3 through their respective players.

The service also offers over 1,300 hours of series like Blue Bloods, The Good Wife and Dexter as well as a pay-per-view Movies On-Demand service.

UPC says that there have been over two millions views of on-demand programme content since it was launched at the end of May.

Now a further 188,000 homes in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Shannon, Naas and Newbridge will receive the service from next Wednesday, 25 July.

UPC says the service has been possible through a €500 million investment in its fibre powered network and claims that its on-demand service will reach 600,000 Irish homes by the end of the summer.

Are you a UPC customer and have you been using the on-demand service? What’s been your experience of it so far?

  • I got a letter from UPC last week telling me that due to the additional services the prices are getting increased as of August… After they tied me into a 12 month contract! Typical! Silly me thinking I was getting something for nothing!

    • That’s quite sneaky indeed! Is it a large increase? I’m not living in an area in Dublin where UPC is available (mgt company issues) and broadband in Ireland just isn’t the same when you’ve had UPC and had to downgrade to anything else!

      Reply
    • Because they have changed the terms of their agreement with you, you can cancel your contract without penalty. That information was included in the letter I got.

    • We got the letter saying we’ve given you faster broadband, TV on-demand, extra channels and a recording app but costs are up and therefore so is your bill.

Interestingly, because we’re on the MMDS system, we don’t get any of the benefits in the letter. We just get to subsidize the cost of the services.

Not a great deal for us.

    • Yeah, got the letter too, price up. I am not delighted by this, but frankly am so ecstatic that I am able to get fast reliable cable broadband at all that I am happy enough to pay it. And no, I am not being sarcastic, the UPC service I get has been been generally excellent, and certainly way ahead of any of the alternatives.

    • I don’t know what the increase is Ted, I actually don’t recall I it was even on the letter. Thanks for that point also Carl! I was too pissed off when I read the letter, that I also missed the fact that I could end the contract. I’m happy with the service, just not happy I wasn’t informed before I entered into the agreement. Depending on what the increase is I might just move over to the other side, will be hard tho I’ve been with them 20 yrs.

Are you tired of ordinary broadband?

  • UPC digital isn’t even an option in Roscommon never mind this new offering. :( It’s either Sky or Saorview here.

    • I love my UPC broadband down here in Waterford!

However, possibly my most hated thing ever is the fact that whenever you try to change channel on the digital, it feckin jumps to that stupid info channel and ya end up nearly hoppin the remote off the tell in your desire to get rid of that Craig Doyle lad!!

  • There are many parts of Dublin where it is not available yet. Very central parts also.

  • Can’t you watch these already on Internet, or am I missing something?

  • Still not available in a large part of Ireland, even Major towns like Dundalk dont even have UPC, so it is not nationwide it is confined to a select few places in Ireland.

Fibre Power is a pipe dream in most places in this country !

    • Exactly Robbie, since when does “Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Shannon, Naas and Newbridge” constitute being “nationwide”???

      Reply
    • not available in Tralee either! I contacted them recently and all we can get is the basic digital tv, but no HD or any of the record features. Also, there is no high speed internet for us as the fibre power isn’t here either! no good to us!

  • If they was ever a reason not to subsribe to UPC it would have to be that annoying Craig Doyle adverts, jesus he even pops up when you open independent.ie website. Nice all to same to see this clown getting some gigs, he’s also advertising windows in the UK, O how the once mighty poster boy of Irish TV has fallen, no doubt the equally mundane TV3 will find something for him to do in the coming months!

  • No matter what type of enhancement UPC make to their product, their customer service will let them down.

    • Dave I was with UPC about a year ago and had a few minor issues that I had to contact their customer service department about and I found them quite good! Was waiting a while to speak to someone in IT (10 mins) but I think they’ve a legacy reputation for bad service that doesn’t really exist anymore!

    • @ted I think you are right. It used to be atrocious, but in the last year or two has improved beyond recognition and is now pretty good. Hard to lose the old reputation though.

    • Katie I think they need to do what every bar/restaurant does to shake a reputation – change the name, lick of paint, new name and a sign in the window saying ‘Under New Management’!

  • We have UPC On demand. Just finished watching the first ever episode of ‘A Touch of Frost’ on it. The video frezes now and again but otherwise it’s fine. Discovery Chanel has a dedicated red button on UPC. If they can give us the red button for BBC I’ll in 7th heaven. (For watching tennis at Wimbledon and choosing what disciplines to watch at the Olympics.)

  • Concentrate on expanding your broadband coverage first lads…

  • Have on demand too and its a good service. Odd blip but nothing major.Big improvement in their service. Sky isn’t perfect either.

  • UPC on demand only provides limited programmes on the TV players; certainly not as much as is available online. My first experience of On Demand resulted in the movie crashing 3 times. In the past 8 months I’ve had my UPC box replaced 3 times dur to failure. Google UPC problems and see for yourself the constant issues there are with UPC equipment. UPC are riding on the back of their broadband service and would be better served to invest in equipment that reliably works with the service they attempt to provide. Appalling service and cannot in all conscience recommend them. Don’t take my word for it though, take time to search the online forums and see for yourself how dreadful a service it can be.

  • A lot of the on demand shows are quite old. 4 or 5 years old seasons that people are unlikely to watch. Good service if they were more recent but not much as is.

  • I recently received a letter from UPC informing me that my bill is to increase from 1st August. They only gave me 10 working days notice about the increase, yet when I asked how soon I could cancel my subscription they told me that I would have to give 30 days notice. One rule for them and a different rule for customers it seems.

  • UPC need to talk to Sky about recording system. It’s pot luck in my house if something records, or when it does record if I get the full program – 10 mins can be missed at the beginning or end. Also on Demand my ass – how many hours/days do you have to wait for a soap to appear after it has aired! Broadband is brill I can’t complain, but the TV they really need to sort out. I’d take sky anyway, but can only get UPC in the development where I live :-(

I’ve seen UPC’s ‘on demand’ offering and TBH it’s pretty poor vs the offerings available in the UK (Virgin for example).

  • They might want to finish 1place. (eg) Dublin before moving to other places. Still not available in south Dublin

  • UPC On demand is appalling. I’ve had it for a couple of months now and never used it. Rte player and 3player and tv box sets are their big selling points. I can get those players through the playstation. A touch of frost sums up the box sets. Netflix has far more up to date shows. They are charging €5.99 for a hd movie, the same movies are €4.99 with iTunes through AppleTV and a fiver in xtravision (have to go out anyway to get the wine in). Now having said that their broadband is excellent. I pay for 25Mb and got a letter recently saying I was being given 30Mb at no extra charge, since that letter my speed haven’t dropped below 28Mb.

  • I look forward to enjoying this new service from UPC. I hope it has the same level of quality and attention to detail as the rest of their superlative service.

  • Until their broadband is available in my area they can stick their tv service where the sun dont shine. They have a poster on the local carphone warehouse shop window about savings if you sign up for both yet their is no broadband service.

Does nationwide include Kerry? Or do we have to revert to our Kingdom status? Switched from UPC to sky recently due to lack of services. When you stop irritating us offering services you can’t provide might reconsider.
