Unemployment remains at 14.3 per cent, as 4,000 off the Live Register

The number of people on the Live Register fell by 4,000 last month, though unemployment remained at 14.3 per cent.

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE on the Live Register fell by 4,000 last month, with the unemployment rate staying at 14.3 per cent.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office showed 430,001 people signing on in April, reflecting a monthly drop of 4,053 people, a figure which translated into an increase of 100 on a seasonally adjusted basis, a figure the CSO said was “effectively unchanged”.

On an unadjusted annual basis, the number of people signing on is down by 9,570 in the last 12 months.

For the 22nd month in succession, the proportion of young people in the register has fallen, with the number of under-25s on the register falling by 8,495 (or 10.7 per cent) in the last 12 months.

Under-25s now account for 16.5 per cent of the total number of people signing on, down from 18.1 per cent this time last year, and 19.2 per cent in April 2010.

The CSO said the number of females signing onto the Register at 400 last month, which had been offset by an identical increase in the number of men joining the register.

Three out of every seven people on the register – some 42.8 per cent – have been signing on for over 12 months, up from 38.5 per cent at this time last year.

The Live Register is not intended as a measure of unemployment: of the 430,001 signing on, 88,442 are working in casual or part-time work. This is slightly increased on last year.

  • Here in oz and the amount of Irish here cause of no work back home makes me sick that they think there doing a good job and making all the young people leave when they know full well the ture story, there exporting the future and they dont care cause they’ll be ok!

  • Not everyone out of work can sign on (self employed, partner working (means test)), so I’m guessing these numbers are well under estimated.

Any idea what the true unemployment figure might be?

    • I believe the CSO’s only authoritative unemployment number is in the Quarterly National Household Survey, which should be out in the first week of June.

    • Gerry/Gavan, would i be right in asking if the people on re-education courses etc are included in this number? I understand they are put into a separate category. If they were counted in, what would the real percentage be? All the while, the leader of FFG and the leader of Labour are creaming over 400k per year in wages as ministers, party leaders and pension contributions… Is it any wonder they couldnt give two damns about the people who are taking the brunt of all their cuts. Every cut so far, has disproportionately impact the lower income households, eg VAT hit (people still need to buy petrol, household goods etc). Regardless of your income, you all need to buy the same goods .. This goes against EVERYTHING that a fair tax system is supposed to do. The people are not stupid, and FFg/Labour will get decimated at the next election… Watch this space!

  • Dont be in a hurry to leave.Just vote yes and the jobs will flow back and we will have loads of jobs to go around…Ah yeah do you remember those promises the five point plan and how FG/Labour going to provide hundreds and thousands of jobs…Now its vote yes and the jobs will come.Sounds exactly like that scene from field of dreams…….I just wish i was a student and could leave this German state.I wish you every luck in getting a job and a future in a country that values its young people and citizens and not the bunch of cowards we have running ours.

  • I’ll be off it myself in a couple of weeks now that I’m finished college and I have to emigrate because there is no work for me here. I’ll probably be joined this summer with number about the above figure.

  • The numbers are stable because an awful lot are high tailing it outta here. They only look stable. Etihad have upgraded their capacity in the past week to cater for the high demand for tickets to Oz.

  • 430,001 people with no money to be customers. Is this really good for business?

  • Love this Seasonally adjusted mantra used to explain reductions in those signing off, historically seasonal might have meant seasonal work in construction, Hospitality, retail. Of course most of know these three sectors are in the toilet so what are the seasonally adjusted justifications? 4,000 more have decided to get out of Ireland more like.

  • 4000 off the Live Register and off to Australia. A “lifestyle choice” is how Noonan described it.

  • If we didnt have emigration we would be at the numbers we are seeing in Spain. People digging into their own pockets to emigrate. Where as the Spanish have language barriers and naturally prefer to stay put. The govt should be thanking and even compensating those who left.

  • Still way too many people on the live register but the numbers are very stable and it’s a great contrast to the likes of Spain who saw a huge rise in their unemployment figures recently.

FG are proud members of European people’s party so it must be devastating news for you that the unemployment rate has never been higher in the eurozone. Why are you guys getting it so wrong ?

Numbers are only “stable” because our young people are emigrating David and for no other reason. Maybe you should reflect on the human cost of that rather then been chuffed that the numbers are stable.

    • Are you stupid !!! they are pulling people off the dole and putting them on pointless Fas courses that are of no consequence, and I know because I’ve done most of them before they pulled me in and when informed of this they have no answers , and no funding for proper retraining…….. pure spin

No jobs ! 26 unemployed people to one available job that’s the reality of it.

    • We have the lowest unemployment rate compared with Spain, Greece and Portugal.

Who can say for sure if its good news or just people leaving? We have no factual evidence on either side of that theory, which is a shame.

No doubt we will have the B JAYSUS frightened out of us by the end of the month and another 10000 will have gone.

    • David, according to Mr Noonan, people are emigrating as a lifestyle choice, not because of the financial and economic mess we are in!!!!!!!!! FG built 60,000 life-style choice emmigrants into their program for government … Glad you guys got something right. You should be ashamed of yourself coming out with comments like this one. You are a disgrace to our country. Financial Terrorism will not win the day.

    • David , you and your FG Party are in lala land – out Town here in Kerry has been stripped of its youth population – - THEY HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY – David – they gave your crowd the chance to correct things – then as soon as ye laid down in a sea of ineptness like FF – they booked their tickets and left the Country , probably , most sadly, for ever !

In fairness, as it has been said we have no way of knowing if that number is down to emigration.

Also regards emigrating being a lifestyle choice I actually agree that it is in a lot of cases, I know loads of recent graduates who never even bothered looking for work and just headed abroad, I also know people who have left jobs to do the same.

There are jobs out there, not as many as I might like but I send in out about 10 cvs a week, and I’m confident I’ll find something in a few weeks when I finish college. I also know one or 2 people who are on the dole/part time dole who don’t even have a CV.

It’s too easy for people to just say “there are no jobs” and go on ye dole/emigrate without having even looked.

Now I absolutely know that this is not always the case and is probably the exception rather than the rule but it still happens
