TWITTER HAS ANNOUNCED major improvements in its system for reporting abuse on the social networking site.
Yesterday, the new system was rolled out to a small group of users, with plans to extend it over the next few weeks.
The company said it is making the process more mobile friendly, requiring less initial information and generally making it simpler to flag tweets and accounts for review.
There will also be a new blocked accounts page with features for managing accounts you have blocked. Additionally, accounts that you’ve blocked won’t be able to view your profile.
Twitter said it is “nowhere near being done making changes in this area”.
“In the coming months, you can expect to see additional user controls, further improvements to reporting and new enforcement procedures for abusive accounts,” it said in a blog post. “We’ll continue to work hard on these changes in order to improve the experience of people who encounter abuse on Twitter.”

But don’t these people just change accounts? I’ve seen that here. I am used to correcting reems of essays and you learn to recognise certain language patterns. I’ve seen ranting reactionaries on here slip in and out of genders as well as account hopping.
The system should be that you can have any profile you want but be verifiable to the service provider by using something like a credit card or telephone number. Trolls disappear when they are easy to identify
Fingerprinting and supplying DNA samples should be mandatory. Good character references should be supplied by a PC and a parish priest and a member of An Garda Síochána not below the rank of seargent.
I get your sarcasm but my suggestion would stop the brave keyboard warriors from making threats to people such as Jessica Ennis Hill.
Twitter is a commercial operation. It is not a human right to have free access to it and therefore the trolls should not have the freedom to comment as they do.

why do ppl even put their personal info online to begin with? pictures, gps location, phone numbers and all? stupid arguement this is.. if your being bullied onlne, just shut up and set up a new account anonymously.. why is this even a problem?
Long long overdue. It’s been ridiculously complicated to report anything on Twitter. So much so it was hardly worth the hassle.
This can also be regarded as censorship in the making.

So far we’ve seen the definition of “troll” extended to include criticism of feminist views. I wonder who Twitters SJW overlords will come after next.

there are laws in place to prosecute anyone making threats online already you know hammy? so we should slow down online debates to a speed acceptable to the weakest and slowest minds online? some ppl seem to be offended online by being simply asked a pertinant question, on a subject they set their stall out on as being informed on, just because it makes their views or posts look stupid or ill informed…

Anything that can be done to prevent these trolls from bullying is welcome in my book. There’s so much of it about and commentators need to be more identifiable.

Better to do the classic forum mod trick of ‘Tachy Goes To Coventry’ so they don’t know they are blocked- otherwise they will just create another account and start again.
Maybe the Journal should do something similar. There is absolutely no facility for reporting abuse in this place. The report comment icon is a gimmick.
For example, and going by the experience, the Journal appears to think that burning down a church with a priest inside counts as fair comment.
