TWITTER IS SET to start correlating personal information from phone app usage to deliver targeted ads to users.
The ‘app graph’ software is being rolled out this week on its new iPhone – which has been available since Wednesday. The Android version shall become available in the coming weeks.
Twitter’s new approach will work by tracking what other apps users are downloading. It is thought that the new approach will help the company make their business model of targeted marketing more effective.
Marketing strategy
According to Re/Code, the website are currently able to target a certain amount of data in line with what users tweet and who they follow, and this will allow them to further refine that.
In its description, the company say that the new app graph will provide people with “a more tailored experience for you on Twitter”.
App information
At current, iOS software allows third parties to ping users’ devices and pull back a list of the apps that are running on a smartphone. The same system is also in place on Android devices, although app providers must specify their ability to do so in their terms of service.
Users will be able to “Opt out of interest based ads” by going through a process on Twitter’s website. It is also specified that the site is collecting information about the apps that users have installed – and not information from within those apps.
