Twitter launching photosharing service – report

TWITTER IS PREPARING to announce the introduction of its own photosharing service, according to a report from TechCrunch.

Citing “multiple sources”, the site claims it’s a natural progression for Twitter and shouldn’t really surprise anyone.

The popular photo uploading and sharing service TwitPic recently caused consternation among its users when it announced it had signed a deal with the World Entertainment News Network which allows the agency to sell images posted via TwitPic.

The New York Times reported that although the agency said it was really only interested in photos being posted by high-profile celebrity users, the parameters of the deal are not fully clear.

Earlier this month, Twitter confirmed that it had bought TweetDeck in a deal thought to be worth about $40m (€28m).

The techcruch article is very vague, not sure it’s entirely believable.
It would definitely make sense for twitter to offer such a service though. With their recent purchase of tweetdeck it’s clear they’re trying to move into services currently offered by third parties.

OH Dear God this is going to cause some amount of trouble! Picture it (pardon the pun) You’re out on the town with the lads, you take a photo of someone in a compromising position ( or a totally innocent one taken out of context) and decide to share it with all your followers “for a laugh”. Que the next morning, a hangover and one very irate wife/ girlfriend/father of your (by now former) mate asking you just what the hell was going on last night.!!!

This takes drunken texting to a whole new level, They should put a 12 hour delay on it just to make sure that you really want Mr Murphy down the road to see his little girl flashing her bits to all and sundry at the wild party that she wasn’t supposed to be at last night. Not to mention somebodies employer looking at their employee throwing up outside a nightclub when they were supposed to be in bed “sick”.

If people want to do that, they can do it already with twitpic or yfrog or photobucket or countless others. Twitter owning the service isn’t going to have any practical bearing on this…

If you read the entertainment section on any news site it is basically all celeb tweets. There is a good revenue stream there for twitter to exploit. I think that if lady gaga posts an image then twitter should be allowed to sell it to infinite crappy newspapers and celeb websites that trade on it. I’d rather that than seeing adverts everywhere. Twitter is providing a massive platform for these people to connect with millions instantly.
