Now you can upload and view GIFs on Twitter

Brace yourself for a Twitter feed full of GIFs sometime next week.

TWITTER HAS ANNOUNCED that it will now support animated GIF files.

Revealing the news on its Twitter Support account, it means that anyone on the main site or using the iOS and Android app will be able to post and view GIFs on the service.

The GIFs need to be clicked on first before they start playing, probably as a way to prevent large files from being downloaded without warning, and to help differentiate them from Vine videos, which also follow a similar format but play automatically.

Like Vine, the GIFs are turned into MP4 and play in the same video format on both the site and app.

Previously, GIFs were only shown on third-party apps such as Tweetdeck, but the move will likely make the site a little bit busier as it tries to get more people using the service.
