THEJOURNAL.IE IS the first Irish site – and one of only two news sites worldwide – to allow users to open up its app directly though Google search.
The feature, called App Indexing, is still being trialled by Google and includes content from Android apps in its search results.
TheJournal.ie is the only Irish site to be chosen for the Android app trial – and only one of two news services, including the Huffington Post, among the 36 chosen worldwide.
If you have the app installed, and you’re searching through Chrome or Google Now, the link directs you to the relevant content in the app itself, instead of opening it up on your mobile browser.
Whenever you search for a story through Google, most stories from TheJournal.ie will include an “open in app” option located underneath the search result itself.
To be given this option, you’ll need to be using an Android device and you should be signed into your Google account. Over time, more articles from TheJournal.ie will offer the same option when you see them in search results.
Google launched its App Indexing feature back in December and it only supports Android apps. Currently, there are only 36 services globally which are allowed to offer this functionality such as 500px, Eventbrite, IMDb, The Huffington Post, Pinterest, and Tumblr.
