ENTERTAINMENT GIANT SONY has released ‘The Interview’ on Youtube, but it’s only available to view in the United States.
The comedy, which spawned an international diplomatic incident, was released online in the past few hours ahead of a limited theatrical release tomorrow.
It was to be distributed on Google’s YouTube for $5.99, on the Google Play app for Android devices and on a dedicated website, seetheinterview.com.
The website states that it is currently only possible to view the movie in the US but that the studio hopes to broaden this worldwide.
There is an Irish connection though, payments for the rental of the movie are being powered by Stripe, the online payments company founded by the Collison brothers.
The company, which this year began working with Twitter and Facebook on their ‘buy buttons’, was recently valued at $3.5 billion.
After previously cancelling the release of the movie because of hacking blamed on North Korea, Sony yesterday announced that the movie would be released in a number of US theatres and online.
The movie features a plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and is believed to have angered the dictator leading to the embarrassing hack on the Sony network.

Why be a dick and do that? Sony are using this to see if releasing movies on Google Play is worthwhile (it is). If you value the industry, pay the fecking 6 euro.
Well I’d pay gladly but… don’t have bandwidth to stream so have to spend hours downloading. So my only way to get it is the illegal way.

Sony will make little money from this and they’ll lose so much from little to no box-office. Since it’s online in HD, it’ll be ripped and torrent instantly.
Great to see an Irish global digital success. Might even catch on as a concept in this fast asleep country of ours.

The whole thing is media hype. North Korea didn’t hack Sony. It may all be a publicity stunt.
