TD says independence from DAA is the only answer for Shannon Airport

Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has called for independence for Shannon from the Dublin Airport Authority, and says the management of the airport needs to be overhauled.

CLARE FINE GAEL TD Joe Carey is calling for independence for Shannon Airport if the facility is to have any hope of surviving.

Speaking on foot of an invitation from Transport Minister Leo Varadkar for the Shannon Airport Authority to submit proposals to his department on the future of the airport, Carey said that it should operate independently from the Dublin Airport Authority.

In recent days the chairman of the SAA Brian O’Connell acknowledged that Shannon must change its business model in order to survive. According to today’s Irish Times O’ Connell said that the way the airport has been organised and managed has to change.

It’s believed a wide range of options on the future of Shannon are being presented to the transport minister.

Joe Carey feels that the airport should still operate under State control, but independent from the DAA, saying that the opportunity for a new lease of life for Shannon cannot be passed up.

He said that the invitation by the minister for suggestions from the SAA indicates that a “note of realism” has entered the debate on the future of the airport. He also said that he has confidence that Vardakar will proceed with a new structure that enhances the airport’s prospects.

Carey said that a competent management team needs to be put in place, along with an aggressive growth plan. He said the needs of the region are key and that a new plan needs to integrate aspects of local industry, tourism and education.

Meanwhile the Limerick Post reports that among the submissions made to Minister Varadkar are plans to rent the airport to private businesses for between 15 and 35 years.

There are fears in the area that a drive for profit would neglect the role that the airport plays in regional development.

  • This is old news! Shannon has needed independence since long before the ridiculous Shannon stop over was ever ditched!
They also need to get over their ambitions for a longhaul network! SNN is a small airport with a small catch entry zone and today’s aircraft can fly from pretty much any major city to anywhere else on the planet nonstop so the need to refuel in SNN is just no longer a valid reason. The US Immigration and customs facilities must cost a fortune to maintain and surely cannot justify the handful if flights that require it!
There is a great market for SNN as a cargo hub, training facility, maintenance center and low fares facility but this needs to be realised with more then a half hearted effort!

  • Interesting remark from a B&B owner when I was down in Dingle. He maintains that Shannon should change its name as it’s not “obvious” enough to many tourists who are booking online and don’t have the benefit of the knowledge that travel agents have.

People will look at a map of Ireland – see Dublin, Cork, Limerick etc. as the primary cities. No US flights to Cork, Limerick seems to have no airport and the only choice is Dublin.

It might seem bloody obvious to us that Shannon and Limerick are beside each other and convenient to the Kerry region but perhaps not as obvious if you are a foreign tourist making your own travel plans.

Shannon airport is to near to cork airport and therefore is there a need for two airports that close together? The only thing going for shannon airport is the long runway that dublin and cork dont have. But in two years the daa hope to build a new runway in dublin which would be longer then shannons.Shannon is on its knees and dublin is the life support thats keeping it alive. If the daa stop keeping it afloat its the death nail for that county.
