THE SUPERMARKET network SuperValu has announced a new €20 million investment plan which it says will create around 200 jobs over the coming year.
Independent shops are among the five stores being added to the 195-store network, while SuperValue says that two new stores – one in Celbridge, Co Kildare and Miltown Malbay, Co Clare – will create almost 200 jobs between them.
SuperValu managing director Martin Kelleher announced the €20m investment project at the network’s national conference in Killarney.
He said that although 2011 brought a difficult trading environment, it “was a good year for SuperValu with €2 billion in retail sales”. Kelleher added that the new jobs would see the SuperValu workforce rise to “well over 12,000″.
The organisation says its total purchase of goods and services last year was “worth over €1.5 billion to the Irish economy”.
