Superquinn to shut Naas store

Trade union to hold ‘intensive talks’ with supermarket over fate of its 100 employees

THE MANDATE TRADE union is to meet with its Superquinn members tomorrow morning to discuss today’s announcement that the Naas branch of Superquinn will close.

The decision to pull out of Naas will affect 100 employees who are now being offered the chance to redeploy within the company. Mandate said in a statement that the union will also enter into “intensive negotiations” with Superquinn in the coming days. The union meets with its Naas members tomorrow morning at 10.30am.

Gerry Light, Mandate’s Assistant General Secretary explained that the staff in Naas were “obviously very shocked and disappointed to hear that the shop is closing due to the expiry of a lease”.  He said that the store itself is trading very well.

It was reported by Newstalk that the supermarket will close on February 4 because its lease has expired. It had hoped to open a new store on the Newbridge Road in the town, but problems with the property market had put the development of this site “on hold”.
