What's a few billion between brothers? Stripe's valuation doubles to $3.5bn

The e-payments service was set up by the John and Patrick Collison in 2010.

THE ONLINE PAYMENTS company founded by two Limerick brothers has received a fresh investment of $70 million (€57 million), valuing the four-year-old start-up at $3.5 billion (€2.8 billion).

The Financial Times reports that Stripe has finished a fundraising round that shows a doubling in the valuation of the company since last January.

Back then, a $80 million (€65 million) injection saw the company valued at $1.75 billion (€1.4 billion).

John and Patrick Collison’s e-payments service Stripe is designed around making online credit card payments easier for developers.

The progress of the San Francisco-based firm has been followed very closely this year with significant announcements involving two of the internet’s biggest companies

Stripe has been working closely with Twitter as the site officially started testing its long-awaited function for users to buy products directly from their timeline.

Facebook is also going in a similar direction and has been testing its own Stripe-powered ‘Buy’ button.

Eh that’s not really true. It was a US based company with US staff focusing On the US market.

I’m sure there are lots of US companies enterprise Ireland could invest in. I’m not sure it should.

    - The first door these guys knocked on was that of Enterprise Ireland who were too busy clapping each other on the backs cause off their made up jobs and fiddling their expenses to help out…..

A point of sale cash till that recognises and checks all currencies and converts them to local currency …
no need for bureau de changes then –
A person can walk into a shop in Paris, Moscow or Johannesberg and use their own currency ….

I work out of the country for more than 6 months of the year, so I see a lot of airports.
How would it make money? The shop owner would still need commission to change the currency at their local bank or else they would make a loss

Rob they already pay commission to the credit card company – loosing money there straight away …. why not let the business make the charge, if needed at point of sale ?

Give it up there Dermot like a good fella. As mentioned, the bank will charge to change this money – they use a buy and a sell rate which are pitched above and below the mid rate – unless the shopkeeper has this info up to date, he will lose out, if he uses these rates, then it’s akin to charging the customer as they are not getting a true exchange rate.

Also, your idea would see is go back to carrying huge wads of cash with us when we go on holidays – that’s kind of retrograde.

A commission free credit card would be far easier but would never happen as no one would be making money out of that.
