THE EDITOR of the Irish Independent newspaper has been promoted to the newly-created position of Editor in Chief of Independent News & Media’s (INM) Irish print titles.
Stephen Rae will now be responsible for the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent and the Herald, ensuring that the titles are “platform agnostic”.
The Irish Independent said Rae’s responsibilities would include making sure that the three titles were “structured, resourced and aligned for an increasingly digital future”.
Each paper will still retain its own editor, but Rae will be charged with ensure the titles are collaborative while still retaining their unique tone of voice and ethos.
A replacement as the Editor of the Irish Independent – a position Rae was appointed to only nine months ago – will be made in due course, INM said.
Rae told his current title that his role was “driving a collaborative change process impacting how we source, package and present content for the benefit of our consumers and advertisers”.
“Stephen’s performance as editor of the Irish Independent and the Evening Herald and his vision for an integrated, digitally adept and platform agnostic newsroom, has made him the standout candidate for this critically important role,” the paper quoted INM chief executive Vincent Crowley as saying.
“A key challenge for Stephen and our exceptional team of editors and journalists is to make our market leading content and great writers more accessible to consumers in a manner and at a price that sustains consumer engagement and the integrity and quality of our reportage.”
Rae had served as editor of the then-Evening Herald Prior to his appointment as editor of the Irish Independent, the country’s highest-selling daily paper. He was succeeded at the Herald by Claire Grady.
Rae’s tenure at the Irish Independent has already seen the paper cease its broadsheet edition, and be distributed only in a tabloid-sized ‘compact’ form.

All these top editors are very much alined to political views, and there job is to make sure their paper expresses this political view over their opposition. Often the truth gets to be a side issue !!
Well I couldn’t possibly know which individual with that surname you are referring to there. But you can guarantee any stories about north Tipp Independent Td’s and questionable awarding of phone licences will start drying up fairly lively.
Michael if you knew about the situation at the Sunday Independent (not the daily independent) you’d know there is – allegedly – an intense conflict between the existing editorial team and the executives appointed by an extremely litigious public figure with deep pockets. So in this case the political viewpoint by the editorial team of the Sunday Indo is directly contrary to that of its “owner”.

I can never figure that out either john. I also cant figure out how someone determines when a paper is shite. Do they buy it a few times and come to the conclusion or do they tend to hate it as the years go on.?
I think it’s the metallica effect, they were cool when no one else was listening to them. Then when they go platinum the fans (readers) complain and say “no way man you used to be about the music (news that I agree with).” I think everyone must be reading the galway advertiser, its very indie… :)
