Spotify rolls out dark redesign as the competition heats up

The redesign comes after rumours the company will hold its IPO sometime in the Autumn.

SPOTIFY HAS GIVEN its site, and its desktop and mobile apps a redesign ahead of a possible IPO and increasing competition in the music streaming space.

The service has gone for a darker, sleeker look, opting for larger images for both songs and albums and representing artists with circular images.

The redesign also includes the launch of a new a collections service called ‘Your Music,’ allowing users to save songs and albums in the one place. It’s works as an alternative to playlists and can be browsed by song, albums, artists or local files.

Other changes include a adjustment to the browse function, which suggests music to listen to in the form of playlists and popular albums.

The time of day will also influence the type of music suggested under the browse tab so while the afternoon will suggest upbeat music to get you through the day, using it during the evening will highlight music that will help you get to sleep.

The redesign comes after numerous reports the company will hold its IPO sometime in the Autumn. It also faces increasing competition from other music services such as Beats Music, Deezer, Rdio, iTunes and YouTube, the latter is now rumoured to be launching its own music streaming service this summer.

The new look is currently available to iPhone, desktop and web users from today, and will be made available to other platforms soon.
