Dublin pub receives 2,700 job applications... through Snapchat

The pub’s owner said this unconventional hiring approach meant he got the most creative and outgoing staff without having to trawl through CVs.

A NEW DUBLIN pub, which came up with an innovative hiring system, has said it received a “record number of applications” for the 20 jobs it had on offer.

Last month Sober Lane announced it would hire 20 people, with one catch – they would have to submit their application through Snapchat. Now the pub has said it received over 2,700 applications in total after their advertisement went viral.

Sober Lane Sober Lane

Commenting on the response to this unconventional hiring approach, owner Ernest Cantillon said it meant the company got “the most creative and outgoing staff without having to trawl through stack-loads of CVs and try to get to know someone on paper”.

Instead, the applicants had ten seconds to impress, which is the most they are likely to have on a busy night in the bar so it makes sense – plus fun and having a laugh is what Sober Lane is all about. I was overwhelmed by the response and so grateful that we had such a huge pool of superb applicants to choose from.

The official opening of the bar in Irishtown, Dublin 4, took place last Wednesday. Their ‘flip a coin’ game, whereby customers can win a free round if their luck is in, has unsurprisingly proven very popular already.

That’s exactly what it is I’d say, I wonder what they mean by creativity in that case

Just nonsense so they don’t seem shallow. Anyone with a but of common sense knows the truth though.

I really don’t think that’s the situation here but if it makes good business sense then maybe so. Companies have been doing that for years. Emirates came to cork for open interviews for air hostess jobs, friend of mine was there and she said they just short listed the tall, slim, good looking candidates.. And that was in front of every other candidate.. So which is better?

Unless I am mistaken, the Cork bar has used snapchat in the past for contests they’ve run. It seems genuinely like an extension of that – a creative way to source outgoing personality types for the bar and not a way to sort the wheat from the chaff in terms of looks…

The bar in Cork does great pizza and pitchers – worth a visit!

It’s called sober lane because their first pub in cork is located on a lane actually called ‘sober lane’.. Just happens to be a good location for a pub and they do incredibly well.

First saw this in Oz. Back in 2002, very popular, lots of funny. Another game that they placed back then, was “Toss the Boss. If u can toss a coin behind the bar into a can. You one win a free round or you paid for two drinks only. Depending on the pub. Never saw it in Ireland. Good luck to them.
