SME focus: Everything you need to know about starting a business

For our first month of in-depth coverage of Irish small businesses, we looked at everything you need to know about getting up and running.

EVERY MONTH THEJOURNAL.IE focuses on a different aspect of life for Small and Medium Enterprises.

SMEs provide around 77% of the jobs in the Irish economy, and the issues they face are crucial to employment and economic growth.

For the first month, we looked at everything you need to know about starting a business in Ireland.

  • #The Big Idea this month was Oishii Sushi, which is taking on a great Irish institution by trying to replace the breakfast roll with sushi. How did founder Ciara Troy go about this, and in the process turn a farmer’s market stall into a million euro business?

When it’s good it can be good but when it’s bad you are on your own. Don’t expect any kind of assistance. No job seekers allowance, nothing. It doesn’t matter how many staff you employed or how much vat, duty and every other tax you’ve paid in to the system. You will be left high and dry to fend for yourself.
Good luck to anyone who tries because it takes b@lls to do what most won’t.

I’d give you a thousand green thumbs for this one if I could. A good summary of the situation. The amount of SME’s facing wipe-out at the moment as they face crippling mortgage obligations from property “investments” needed to work made during the tiger years is considerable. Many of them have full order books and have to lay people off and/or leave the country to keep the banks happy. If every SME added just one job opportunity it would half the unemployment rate overnight at least. In this country multinationals and big corporates are God. When they are all gone what’s left? The politicians and banks will then see sense? Probably not. A policy of some kind of nursery system for businesses starting out is needed and the people who have the b@lls to do it valued, even if it does go wrong. It would be better than losing them and the jobs to the US or UK and elsewhere. Oh…and I’m not one of them, past all that now, but I remain a student of the situation.

Because its easier to give a tax break to a large corporate and hope they can create jobs in the short term. I am in the UK, 1 year in business and I have to say the support and grants available to small businesses here are second to none right now…Even on the corporate tax front, if you innovate an IT platform and IP in the UK, only 10% corp tax applies…Ireland should take a closer look at what the UK are doing with SMEs, the UK is starting to thrive, Ireland should be following suit.
