Dyson could hold the key to doubling your smartphone's battery life

It’s invested in a company that creates solid-state batteries, which could lead to improved battery life for all your devices.

DYSON, THE UK COMPANY best known for its vacuum cleaners and other household appliances, has invested in a company that aims to improve battery life.

It has invested €14.2 million in Sakti3 which claims its solid-state batteries offers about twice as much power as a standard lithium-ion battery.

According to MIT Technology Review, it achieves this by using new materials and manufacturing techniques to improve its storage capacity.

Sakti3 uses new materials and manufacturing techniques to achieve higher energy density. The company’s battery does away with the flammable liquid electrolyte used in conventional lithium-ion batteries, which makes it feasible to use a different set of high-energy storage materials.

Solid-state batteries can be miniaturised and tend to have a longer shelf-life than standard batteries. They can withstand high temperatures meaning they can use materials that would normally be too dangerous to use in a traditional lithium-ion battery to increase the amount of energy stored.

While the initial applications for this technology will first appear in Dyson products,  it could be used for other devices such as smartphones, tablets, and electric cars. Sakti3 says its methods allows “high quality, large scale production” which can be done at a lower cost.

While device technology quickly improves with every passing year, battery technology has struggled to keep up. The only way to improve battery life is to increase its size meaning you either choose a device that’s thin and light but only lasts a day, get a device with a bigger battery but is thicker and heavier, or buy an external battery pack.

Big move…. Smart move. The next smartphone on the market that boasts a substantially more efficient battery will sell in a heartbeat. It’s only a matter of time that happens. My HTC currently lasts about 6 hours… Joke! Big profits for Dyson.

Smartphone manufacturers also need to keep looking at making the individual components of the phone more efficient. Everyone wants more battery life in their phone yet spend the day with their 6″ giant screens on full brightness, wifi, bluetooth and data turned on etc. Increasing battery capacity is obviously a big move but it wont go too far if the phone itself is still eating power.

Nice one, this is going to make Dyson a very rich company if this battery lives up to its promise of being smaller, cheaper and more powerful.

Your battery has clearly run it course. It’s fully functional lifetime is only 6 months. Buy a new one. If its less than that, bringing the phone back to where you bought it, Samsung gives a 2 year warranty on its phones.

Class, only problem is though, I’ve heard this every ten days for the past five years, we’ve been promised better batteries for a long time now, and the fact is that they’re not materializing on the market, anywhere, jus’sayin.

For that matter, what’s going on with graphene these days? (I realise i could just google it but I’d rather stir up some conversation). I thought we’d be hanging TVs like posters and folding our laptops 6 times to stick them in the shirt pocket by now

Don’t see why smartphone companies should adopt this to be honest. More and more people are buying new phones every year, a large portion of upgrades are due to battery deterioration and the “convenient” timing of the upgrade. Smartphone companies are milking this gravy train for all it’s got. If a company does adopt these super batteries, they will miss out in next year’s sales as their phones will still be going good.

Battery technology hasn’t really advanced much in the last 20 years in comparison with technology in mobile phones.. In another 20 years we will have phones that will have storage up to 1 terabytes built in, or maybe phones with minimum storage and everything will be stored on the cloud as 4 or 5 or 6G coverage may be available everywhere.. Hopefully battery technology could advance a little faster than it is doing now.
