This device can fully charge a smartphone in 30 seconds

StoreDot, a startup from Tel Aviv, says its charger and battery can fully power a smartphone in the space of half a minute.

WHILE THE PROBLEM of smartphone battery life is something that has yet to be solved, one Israeli company is approaching it a little differently by looking at how they’re charged.

StoreDot has created a prototype battery and charger which it says can charging time down to 30 seconds.

The startup, which came from the nanotechnology department at Tel Aviv University, developed its prototype for the Samsung Galaxy S4, but has plans to adapt the technology to charge other phones.

While the protoype involves a charger, the real change is in the battery itself. The startup has been developing biological semiconductors, made from naturally occurring compounds called peptides – a compound created by two or more linked amino acids – which is used in the battery to reduce charging time.

The technology was demonstrated at Microsoft’s Think Next conference in Tel Aviv, and while the prototype is bulky, the makers say it plans to create a smaller version of it before it’s commercially produced.

Doron Myersdorf / YouTube

Those hoping this product will arrive soon will have to wait a while though. The makers say they plan to bring the product into mass production in late 2016, and there’s no date for when the product will actually be released.

Brian, may I suggest you do your research. If anything it was the Palestinians who were in league with Nazi Germany, this is a historical fact. They had planned to replicate Hitlers concentration camp model in Germany and use it in the Middle East to kill every jew. In his journals, Muhammad Amin al-Husayni said Hitler told him “the Jews are yours”. To this day Muhammad Amin al-Husayni is revered as a national hero by Palestinians.

I’ve never understood why manufacturers don’t make strides to develop a smartphone that lasts more than a day between charges. Surely whoever nails that corner of the market will have a winner on their hands. They’re power hungry buggers! I miss the days of phones lasting several days at a time. Good luck to these guys. They may well have struck gold here.

No they won’t because everyone will just hijack the technology once someone makes the breakthrough, just like the first phone with a capacitive touchscreen didn’t take over the market. I read a while back that there is a breakthrough in battery technology in the pipeline, something that could last a week with fairly heavy usage.

But I won’t be buying and urge others to do the same for this or any other Israeli products unless and until it concludes a fair peace deal with the Palestinian people whose land they have stolen & continue to ‘ethnic cleanse’.

This was a powerful tactic in ridding the world of the similar ideology of Apartheid in South Africa. Israel deserves at least the same condemnation and more for its sheer brutality.

I’m not aware of any boycotts of Cuba, Iran or Iraq, but certainly the boycott of South Africa was very important in bringing about the end of apartheid.

Obviously many other factors played a part, but a consumer led boycott highlighted apartheid, scared South African producers and the government, prompted buyers to source produce elsewhere, plus discouraged investment, and academic and cultural ties, which isolate the government. Also the eventual imposition if trade embargoes would not have happened without the popular support built trough the boycott campaign.

Israel is treating millions of people like animals on a daily basis, and does so openly and with impunity. What can we, normal people, do to challenge it?

    Or should we ignore it?

“I’m not aware of any boycotts of Cuba” – so, you never heard of the Cuban Blockade which continues to this day and has had zero effect in regime change or changing living conditions for Cubans. The same happened with Iraq post-Gulf War I. The only thing that changed the regime and living conditions for Iraqis was a full-blown invasion and we know how that ended. Iran is currently subject to strict sanctions at the moment, although the terms have been somewhat relaxed recently. Again no change in regime or living conditions. North Korea has been the subject of sanctions for decades, again making no difference. I think you’re overestimating the effect of the South African boycott and underestimating the effect of local politicians, citizens and foreign lobbying to be honest.

What are you talking about, Da Vi D? I wrote two comments: the first pointed out one guy’s hypocrisy and the second comment pointed out how boycotts do not, and never will, work. In fact, the opposite can be said to be the case. When you boycott entire nations a trend towards hardline positions is well documented. As the world hardens its resolve on Israel, so the Israeli public swings towards ever more right-wing politics. By supporting BDS you are actually prolonging the suffering of the Palestinian people by saying you support blocking any attempts at dialogue (not allowed under BDS), any efforts by Israel to improve Palestinians’ lives (not allowed under BDS), making 10,000s of Palestinians unemployed (Palestinians are not allowed work for Israeli companies under the terms of BDS), and you condemn any peace-making efforts (no negotiations or peace-talks are allowed under BDS).

So, you’re saying there is something strange about one person making a public announcement about a piece of technology in 2013 followed by another group making a similar, though not identical (and when you compare, the Israeli product is inferior), announcement? To me, it kind of sounds like any other industry. Hollywood generally releases two related, yet competing, movies every year (thing Dante’s Peak vs. Volcano; Deep Impact vs. Armageddon; Battle: Los Angeles vs. Skyline). Also, Samsung and Apple do this all the time. So do car manufacturers, and computer producers.

Sorry, just to clarify, the first sentence should finish “…making a similar, though not identical…announcement a whole year later?”

Yes. That’s what I’m saying. There is something strange about it.

it’d be the same as a normal bill. a battery can only take a certain charge.

charge 1kwh for 2 hours is the same as charging at 1kwh in 30 seconds.

Think of a pint of beer, if you knock it back your getting the same amount as if you drink it slowly.

Now admittedly I know nothing about electricity but 30 seconds flash charging as opposed to leaving your phone plugged in all night while you sleep… 6 to one, half a dozen to another I would say.

If you had to walk more to charge the phone by somehow tapping into the energy reserves in our bodies then that would be a good move.

    I’d buy it!

I’d also buy a big one for my Electric Car and E-bike.
