First iMessage, now Skype has its own messaging bug issue

A fix for the bug has been recently released.

(Updated: 16:56)

SHORTLY AFTER APPLE’S iMessage was found to crash if you send it a specific message, it turns out Skype had suffered from a similar bug.

While the iMessage bug was caused by a stream of Arabic characters that wasn’t easily recreated, the Skype bug is caused by a shorter message that’s eight characters long, one that affects the Windows, iOS and Android versions.

What makes the bug worse is your chat history is downloaded from Skype’s server every time you open it.

That means if you remove and reinstall the app, the same problem will occur as the message will reappear and crash the service.

Skype confirmed the bug saying it had released updates for all versions of Skype that were affected, and recommended that users download the latest version to fix it.

While the iMessage bug was caused by a bug in the way iOS’s Notification Center renders Unicode (a way of encoding characters that can handle languages which have a greater character count than English) which causes it to choke, it’s not clear why Skype suffers a similar result from a more common string of text.
