AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS of hype, Samsung made the Galaxy S4 official last night.
There’s a laundry list of new software and hardware features to go over, so we’ll hit the most important stuff first.
The Galaxy S4 will have a 5-inch full HD display and a plastic body. It runs the latest version of Android called Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz “skin” that adds several more user interface tweaks and software features.
The hardware design doesn’t look that much different than the Galaxy S III, but the device is noticeably thinner and lighter than before. And even though Samsung stuck with a plastic casing, the materials don’t feel cheap.
It’s not as ideal as a metal and glass body, but it’s definitely not terrible either.
On the software side, the GS4 will run Android Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google‘s operating system, but Samsung added a slew of extra features on top of it.
The camera app has been completely redesigned to match the interface on the Galaxy Camera. And there are several new shooting modes, including one that lets you automatically “erase” a blurry figure in the background.
The phone’s front-facing camera can tell when you’re looking at the device and automatically adjust the screen brightness based on the kind of content you’re looking at. (It will darken when you’re reading an e-book, for example.)

Samsung also added a feature called Hover that lets you hold your finger a centimetre or two over the screen to view extra content. This was most useful in the email app.
‘Eye-tracking’
When you hold your finger over a message in the inbox, you get a pop-up preview of the message. You can also use a waving gesture over the screen to scroll through photos or songs.
And yes, the Galaxy S4 does have that rumored eye-tracking feature for scrolling through pages, but it doesn’t work quite as we had imagined.
When looking at the phone, you have to tilt the device to make the page scrolling. It didn’t feel very natural when we tried it though and it’s still easier to use your finger to swipe on the screen.
Samsung says the GS4 will launch in the second quarter of this year but did not announce pricing or a specific launch date.
Got all that? Now for some more gritty details, software features, and hardware specs on the GS4:
16, 32, and 64 GB storage options
Micro SD slot for expandable storage up to 64 GB
2 GB of RAM
441 ppi screen resolution
Samsung would not comment on the processor speed, but did say it will vary by region.

The thing is that smartphones are now fairly mature products, evolution has slowed, phones will evolove at the speed of PCs form now on, people are going to be disappointed every time a new phone comes out because it doesn’t have the ‘revolutionary new feature’ but rather a small specs bump.
Because of this the phone manufacturers are trying to wow people with numbers rather then overall experience – same goes with camera mega pixels, the lens gives the quality and not the numbers, anything under 10 mp is fine more most people, if you want more pixels you probably shouldn’t be shooting with your phone. On the processor front – mobile phones (let alone most PC’s) do not need a 8 cores right now, they don’t even need quad core for the most part – a good quality dual core will work very well and not drain the battery in a few hours, a balance needs to struck between performance and power consumption.
The S4 has about as many new features as you are going to get in any new phone that hits the market, forget the hardware, its about software innovation from now on and even that is slowing in terms of evolution.
A man once said in the 19th century that everything can can be invented has already being invented.
Long way to go still. Super hd will come to phones. Bendy phones. Phones with terabytes of space. 4g?? Try 8 or 9g :)
All im saying kids is in 10 yrs people will look at your phone in the same way we look at nokia 3210 remember those? Or the 5100 I think. That black indestructible phone :)
I agree, don’t get me wrong, tech innovation is not going to stop, its just not going to move at the speeds it did from say 2007 – 2011. I just have a feeling that like laptops the phones we have in 5 years time are not going to be that different in terms of hardware apart from speed and maybe size.
Basic design of pcs has not chsnged over last 20 years only for size and speed. I remembee I think it was back in 98. I got a 64 meg graphics card for my pc damn that was da bomb back in the day :) now there is new GTX card that would be tens of thousands of times faster :) but yeah pount taken design might not change much.
Journal might be worth doing a article on evolution of pc and games consoles :)
Phones and PC’s evolved? Gasp! I thought they were just created by an intelligent designer…
You’re going to electronic hell my friend, where your screen is always broken and there’s never any service.
Repent I say, Repent!
@ David. technology will not slow down, you should read ‘Moore’s Law’ – since 1965 technology has doubled ever 24 months, and there has been no let up in this for the past 45 years. Phones will get smarter, smaller, faster, and something else will evolve from them. Its what consumers demand, and what company’s need to provided in order to keep there shareholders happy. The phone is just one path in technology evolution. I bet people were saying the same as you before the smart phone was invented.
Moore’s Law only tells you about chip density, and by implication processing power. It tells you nothing about user utility. If it directly translated into experience for a given function, MS Word 2013 would be 1024 times better than Word 97, and – well, it isn’t.
The period often quoted as “18 months” is due to Intel executive David House, 24 months is the standard, and yes it referees to the amount of transistors that can be put on a chip, which is the basis for any technology. So by that standard things will get smaller and faster, and as they get smaller and faster more things are possible, hence the evolution of technology.
The one feature that’s missing from the “laundy list” is that its not waterproof. The Sony Experia Z ,and Motorola Razr are. Has anyone else been told their phone will not be fixed under warranty because of water damage?
As far as I’m aware, even though it has 8 cores, it only uses 4 at a time, so realistically it’s only 4 cores. I believe it’s a power saving feature. 4 low power cores for general drudgery, and for more powerful cores for serious processing as required.
Started with the Samsung Tocco then on to the S1,2 and soon the 3.
Tried the iphone but for me it’s Samsung all the way.
(phones have come a long way since the Motorolla car battery phone of the early 80′s)
Previous iphone user here. Sorry but that ship sank over year ago. I had iphone 4. Instead of getting 4s I went for S3 and was like moving from 90′s pc to modern instantly. Just blew apple out of the water for usability and ease of use.
You never hear of galaxy users moving to iphone its other way round. Apple were good but they once again lost direction. iOS has not evolved it was good 5 yrs ago but if you use a galaxy then pick up iphone its functionality feels awful.
Mr cook in apple does not have vision as jobs had. He left before apple crashed. History is repeating.
4s user here. About 7 or 8 months left on my contract. Definitely switching to android. Even though I jail broke my iPhone, it still hasn’t a patch on the S3.
Also :) bit torrent can be used on android. Soooo you can download any kinda file to devise. That cant be done with apple.
Also if you wany to put movie on device it can be downloaded via bit torrent. Legally of course :) galaxy plays everything mpg.avi no need to use itunes to convert and load onto device.
Hate to say it but if your tech savy its bit of a no brainier what phone you but.
Yeah but s2 hmmm in fairness not huge numbers changed I know I didnt till s3 which has to be the first high end Samsung to target the masses and they got it right.
I have used iphone 5 but annoying how locked it is no menus like android no functionality. Put it this way if you know your .exe from your .dll you should be on android.
Are you a teenager? Seems like it. We are all jealous even though a few of us are iPhone users?
I like my iPhone, but I think the s3 was a better phone. So I’m going to change. Where does jealousy come into into it? Grow up little boy.
I have the iPhone 4s, no interest in the 5 at all. The Samsung is the superior phone and allows you to do SOOOO MUCH MORE but it’s a money thing for me. Ill stick with the 4s. Can’t justify the move. Pity
The main difference for me between Apple and Samsung is, from my experience with both, is:
Samsung have better gadgets and the Android system gives you a lot of freedom, however;
Apple products have a familiar, simple interface and perform at their peak for longer. Samsungs tend slow down easier when a lot of the memory is used up. This does happen with Apple products, but not as much.
But Samsung, and Android, still have the better OS and gadgets.
They’re all great phones compared to the Nokia 3210 that I had that was missing the number 7!
@JayTee.. Apple have actually had 6 phones in 6 years, not 1 every 2 years.
Also Android is just as flawed as iOS, just in different ways.. Android is probably better at the moment but the build quality of iPhones are still ahead (marginally).
Ah come on Tom, android for does not have poor usability!
Touchwiz on the other hand is decidedly ugly! First thing I did with my GS3 – install Nova launcher.
meh…, still has the problems that i have on the S3, too big, made of plastic, and power button opposite volume keys. amount of times i shut it off while adjusting the volume.
Well the whole plastic thing… id rather have a few little scratches which could be avoided with a case then having a sheet of shattered glass that cant be avoided with a regular case but saying that it would be nice to see a brushed aluminium back :/
Im an iPhone user that switched to HTC One when it came out
Nice screen, however ive already had to send it back for repair once, due to a manufacturing fault with the aerial. Ive recently had to take all of my music off it due to a bug in android where the mediaserver process eats up battery life. In call volume is pretty poor as well.
Looking to upgrade in the future, and not sure where to go.
Theres a lot of positives about android. A lot more innovation than iOS, however there are somethings that apple just nails. Making the device a media device being just one of those.
I had a loan of a HTC 1 while the screen on my S1 was being replaced.
Seriously nice phone that has the bells & whistles.
It would be a close second for me.
You guys must be thinking of the HTC One X / S / V. As the new HTC One is only being released later this month / early April! Getting great reviews so far.
Let down ?? When you consider the s3 is year old and still beats the pants off anything else out there. When you consider there is notjing out there to push its quad core to the max.
If this yr the s3 came out it would still be very advanced. It has 4g thats not rolled out yet. To be honest every two yesrs is plenty to update samsung. I’ll wait till s5 when I change.
Well I think it is a let down considering a lot of the features are available on the Note2.. And if the size of the phone doesn’t put you off then the Note2 isn’t much bigger and it’s cheaper. The 8 core processor isn’t available everywhere, the wireless charging mat will have to be bought separate, the eye scroll isn’t actually eye scrolling.
But don’t get me wrong, it’s gonna be a cracking phone. I just think it could have been better.
And yes you’re right to wait for the s5! I’ll be the same!
Yes.. It could have been better.. It’s the same as the iPhone 5 being a let down after the 4 and 4s.. There’s nothing there that’s new that will help people in every day life apart from the camera and the battery life.
I bought the Note II just last week, some people say I was daft and should have waited for the S4……some laugh…:(
I feel so ashamed now having the slim, powerful easy to use aesthetically pleasing Note II.
I’ve had a phone from almost every manufacturer and used op systems from Blackberry, iOS, Windows and Android….and the Note 2 is the best phone I’ve ever had. It’s not awkward despite it’s size…it’s not big, every other phone is just small! You made the right choice!
That’s a power saving feature, 4 low power cores for average stuff and 4 high power cores for the fancy pants stuff. It switches between the two sets depending on what it’s doing.
The press release says this will result in a 70% power saving (so I read on Engadget).
No doubt someone will hack it to use all 8 cores at some stage though.
I’ve had S3 for almost a year now. It’s like the child I never wanted to love all the same. Looks like the s4 will come out just as I’m due my upgrade. Boom!
No replaceable or extendable battery, no extendable memory, I’m not yet convinced with their camera gamble either. Aesthetics are subjective, the back of the one will look like an ice skating rink after a while, and sense skin isn’t great. SG4 all the way fo me
Not all that impressed to be honest. Full of gimmicks and bloatware that many people may not actually use. Some nice specs but I know a lot of people who have had major hardware problems with the s3. I have the s2 and it does everything that you need it to, near perfect phone. Admittedly there’s not much more Samsung could do in terms of hardware apart from upgrade it a bit, but design wise I think it’s a major let down when you compare it to the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z or the new LG phone that’s coming out soon (that might be one to watch out for).
Samsung v apple in terms of specs, Samsung hands down, hard to argue it but winner everyday is IOS ahead of Android. Android apps crash constant (camera app big one for that on S3), no skygo except s3, viruses, malware, bloat ware, and I know being petty bit some apps in Android look developed by 12 year olds (writing wrong formatted, images missing or wrong). Apple apps developed to much higher standard. Just my 2 cents
Seriously??
What are you doing with your android phone??
viruses, malware and bloatware??
I’ve never had any of these problems with any android device.
Googles rules regarding app specifications are far more relaxed than apples, but that’s one of the advantages. This is probably one of the main differences between the two. the Play store is pretty much a free market mentality.
I’ve no problem with that because I do my research.
The people that are saying apple for life are corporate sheeps , you buy the best phone for features , hardware not the badge, the sooner the sheeps realise this the better, the amount of people that think apple pcs phones etc are the best makes me laugh try play bf3 or crysis on a mac not a hope, apple died when steve jobs died
It’s a bit of an odd argument you’re making. A washing machine isn’t great at doing the dishes, but it’s not meant to be. Macs were never gaming machines, they were never meant to be, so it’d be a bit silly to by a mac if you want a games machine. To be honest, while PCs were superior to consoles in power and the types of games available, that gap has narrowed over the lat few years, and it isn’t cost efficient to spend €1000+ on a gaming-spec PC or €2000 for an iMac to play games on when you could buy a console for a fraction of the price for the same games, given that games these days are deigned for consoles first and home computers second. Buy the right tool for the job, and don’t blame a hammer for not being a pliers.
S4 will be powered by an 8-core Exynos 5 Octa processor too 4 cores @ 1.6G + 4 @ 1.2GHz …gpu PowerVR SGX 544MP same as chip iphone but clocked from 350 to 533MHz on the S4
LOL, I’ve had wireless charging on my phone and tablet for the past 19 months. Wireless charging kicks ass, specially on a smart phone, as soon as you put it down is charging, and always full when you want to use it.
No not like a dock. You don’t dock or plug anything in. You just have to be in range. It charges by induction. its basically just a mat or a pad. once you place your phone on it, it starts charging.
Sarcasm clearly wasted. I know what wireless/inductive charging is. But basically its like a dock, you have to plug the mat in to power source. With a decent dock its also plugged in and you can conveniently slide your phone in to charge, also sync, and also play music from thevaudio out to your amp. So a dock is better! I just think wireless charging sounds cool, but that’s it.
the fact that the s3 and s4 have room for additional storage should be enough to convince anyone to make the switch. It means you have the option of a 128gb phone!
I aint exactly a fan of Apple products but i say dont bother your hole buying ANY of the galaxy s range. Whys that Keith i hear you ask? Well, because, i fix phones for a crust and the cost of repairing screens on any of the galaxy s range are ridiculous. Hundreds of euros to be ridiculously precise, whereas the iphone 4/4s cost about 85. I had a girl cry, literally cry down the phone at me two days ago as i gave her the price to repair screen on s3. And im cheaper than the big smoke as i live in the sticks and dont have electricity or running water to pay for!!!
I had the S III for about three months and absolutely hated it. It’s too big. I really missed being able to send texts and browse the web with one hand.. I have a tablet, so I don’t need my phone to be any bigger than a 4″ screen makes it. I think this is the ideal size for a phone..
As an iPhone 4S user I’m can’t be happier..can somebody explain me why Samsung is a better phone. I’m traveling a fair bit between Ireland and UK and I can see that ratio is around 10:4 10 for iPhone and 4 for Samsung or other make. What exactly am I missing for using iPhone ?
That could be..I’m not claiming that iPhone is better or that statistically it outsells Samsung… It’s just what I notice while waiting for the plane or on London Underground..well again that’s only circumstantial. Even between the people I know there’s big iPhone advantage. I have my apps (weather, news,eBay,amazon, done deal, currency converter etc.) which are very well made and easy to use,I have enough battery for days use…so really I think it’s down to personal preference.
Widgets, additional storage and playing any media file dropped onto the hard drive are all basic stuff I require from a phone.
Additional features like NFC, tasker and the array of customisation is an added bonus.
I’m not into this samsung apple show down nonsense, each phone has their merits, but I have to say I was shocked when I went to set an alarm on my other halfs iPhone5 a while back. You cannot edit the volume or the vibration on an alarm, independent of changing the phone settings..coming from an Android system, where I was getting to grips with NFC and taster usage, I found it bizarre that that smallest thing was not possible.
Had a iphone 3gs and an itouch. Jail broke both to try and get some sort of freedom.
My boss gave a S1 for work a couple of years ago. I honestly couldnt believe the difference.
Have since owned the S2 and now have the S3. My HDMI adaptor arrived yesterday, can now play HD via my tv.
Was seriously thinking of the note, but will see what CPU the S4 gets shipped to Ireland with.
I hate google, but Android is far better that ios, even if the OS is just a massive data collecting scam.
There is one very important thing you need to know about this phone that is left off the “laundry list” of features listed in the article. It is not waterproof. The Sony Experia Z and Motorola Razr are. This is Ireland. If your phone is water damaged the warranty does not cover it. My last 2 phones suffered this fate. Nearly everyone I know has had the same experience. Its great to be able to wash it after using it while working on your car or in the garden. Or taking pictures and videos of Dolphins. The Sony seems to have the edge in that you can use the touchscreen with wet hands.
OK So here is the thing….I will not be able to take the techies on with their knowledge of technical specifications but I can clearly see that the release of NOKIA LUMIA 920 scared SAMSUNG into quickly developing this most unnecessary upgrade to the Galaxy S3 which is supposed to be the best smartphone around and yet had to run for cover only one year after it launched.
I think Samsung did not see WIRELESS CHARGING coming because as far as I see, it is the only real feature to call home about regarding this new S4.
Samsung will soon realise that with the level reached in smartphone manufacture, they are really winning because of Android…but Nokia will still beat them at hardware smartness. Just wait for Windows to catch up.
Oh how I wish Nokia will hit the smartphone market with Android phones as HTC do alongside Windows and then the whole SAMSUNG vs IPHONE hullabaloo will be blown away.
You say unnecessary, but all makers relase new flagships once a year so im quite sure that lumia 920 wasnt the reason for relase of sgs4… it wasnt htc one either, nor sony xperia z… it was just about a time to present a n ew flagship and thats what they did.
Perhaps my use of the word unnecessary was a bit high-handed but I see your point. I just think thought that Samsung risk being seen as over-reliant on Android if they have to release a new version just to add features that arte already on the market on competitors’ phones.
