Ryanair to sue Budget Travel over ‘unauthorised selling’ of tickets

RYANAIR HAS ANNOUNCED it is bringing a High Court case against an Irish travel agency over alleged unathorised selling of tickets for the airline’s flights.

The airline claims that Budget Travel mis-sells Ryanair flights by screenscraping ticket information from the airline’s website and selling seats at inflated prices to consumers. Budget Travel has rejected the claims.

In a statement, Ryanair said that it allowed and encouraged “price comparison only” websites to access its timetable and pricing information in the interest of price transparency. It says the licence agreement – which allows access in return for a €100 charitable donation – was open to all genuine price comparison websites but that, while many such as Skyscanner.net have signed up to the agreement, Budget Travel “has refused”.

Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said:

Budget Travel has no permission or agreement with Ryanair and we have been forced to take legal action to insist that they immediately desist from unlawfully scraping and selling Ryanair’s low fare flights often at inflated prices to unsuspecting consumers.

Ryanair claims that the agency applies price mark-ups of €18 or more and fails to provide customers with a cost breakdown when selling seats.

It also says that the agency fails to pass on passenger details, meaning that Ryanair cannot communicate directly with customers in the event of changes to schedule or flight disruptions.

It said that Budget Travel fails to forward passenger credit card details, which means refunds cannot be passed onto customers directly, and that the agency charges upwards of €75 for returning funds issued by the airline to passengers.

Ryanair also said the agency did not offer ancillary services including special assistance reservation, seat reservation, and priority boarding, and fails to notify customers of the airline’s terms and conditions when booking.

So the man that likes to slap on as many charges as he can, is suing another others, claiming they are doing similar?

So in Ryanair world all travel agency’s should close down. €18 markup is good value if you don’t have to deal directly with Ryanair, just turn up fly, transfer waiting and then hotel. Ryanair provides cheap flights so stick to what you do best. there is no way I would use them as a hotel package operator, if you do,you find the hidden charges carry on to transfers and hotels and the markup is more than €18.

Good old Ryanair free ads through arbitration. Probably the best marketeers in the world.

I was trying to work out what their angle on this could possibly be, seeing as how they obviously don’t care about their customers getting value for money and it’s not like Ryanair loses money itself from this, at first glance. Then I came to the line “[Ryanair] said that Budget Travel fails to forward passenger credit card details”. Hmmm… I see.

I agree Alan. Too many people pay 29euro for a flight and complain when it’s not world class service. Nobody forces you to pack too many things in your bag, order the €5 sandwich or pay for priority boarding. As somebody said above, if you play by their rules, they provide a brilliant service. I once got a return flight to the UK for 2cents all in, including taxes and charges. What else can you buy for 2cents?

Thanks Steve. And yet the complaints still roll in.

In fairness I was probably very lucky and it was a once off but that’s what it cost me that particular time and no matter what way you look at it, 2cents is an amazing price for any service

    The angle?

Well all that advertising space they can sell to third parties and you have to suffer through while you try and drag yourself through the booking process is the majority of their profit margins…

If you book on budget travel they can’t pester you with advertising

Actually I`m not really happy with Ryanair services :( tried to book flight with prepaid mastercard , they website show an error all the time, I`ve called to theyr help phone, and what you think they adviced me? Try other browser, try to delete cookies on your computer… when I have done it with no results and called them back they adviced me to try another card.
I have no words to say… that the exellent service ….
So… sometimes it is easier to pay EUR 18 for booking, then get result with Ryanair : (

P.S. card I`v used is payzone prepaid mastercard which even in ads announced cheeper booking with Ryanair, so I assume they specially make problems with other cards in order to promoute theyr own (Ryanair)cards.
