Ryanair named second-worst short-haul airline by consumer watchdog

BUDGET AIRLINE RYANAIR has been named the second-worst short-haul carrier by a consumer watchdog.

The company scored a satisfaction rating of just 38 per cent from a panel of over 8,000 members of Which?, a British consumer watchdog.

Ryanair came just behind Thomas Cook, the worst-rated short-haul airline, which received a rating of just 37 per cent.

In contrast, Aer Lingus came second overall in the study to find the best short-haul carrier with a satisfaction rating of 67 per cent.

The Irish airline was behind Swiss International Air Lines, which had a rating of 76 per cent.

Ryanair received just one star out of five from panel members for its boarding process. It received two stars out of five for value for money.

The results were compiled from an online panel of 8,227 members who answered questions about their most recent flight in the past year.

  • Flying Ryanair is akin to having a smear test. You’d rather not, but sometimes it’s necessary, so you grit your teeth and get on with it.

  • I really wish people would cut Ryanair some slack. Most of the people who vote them down in these kinds of things have likely forgotton to check in online and got charged, had too much weight on their luggage and got charged or had too big a carry-on bag and got charged.

    If you play by their well-publicised, well-documented rules you won’t have a problem. They are good where it matters most – price and safety record. Anything beyond that is a bonus when you’ve paid a tenner for a flight and people are so quick to forget that Ryanair completely revolutionised European air travel – what they have done for tourism across Europe is outstanding.

    • Couldnt agree more. Its always the same complaints, that “they get you with their hidden charges” and blah blah blah. Its a budget airline for short haul flights. I just flew to London for 40 quid return, cheaper than the train to Galway or Cork. No problems with the flights. “There’s no leg room”…. If you want more leg room take Aer Lingus and pay the difference then.

    • Tenner a flight me hole. Those days are well gone. They charge you €5 per person each way just booking the flight & there is no way to avoid it so Ryanair should be forced to stick it into the advertised price the con artists.

      They are no longer that cheap & suddenly Air Lingus are always worth a proper look before flying with these gangsters looking to catch you with sly penalties at every turn

    • No prob with most of their hidden charges (but the Credit Card charge, for one, is a scam). However their complete disregard for any level of customer service or decency is a disgrace. They pretend to be cheap, can they not also pretend to be cheerful?! I don’t like extremists and they are (generally) extremely rude, unhelpful, ungrateful….

    • Funny thing is, if you are 6ft or taller Ryanair has more leg room than any other airline. You are guaranteed that the person in front cannot recline their seat (as fixed on Ryanair). Avoid the kneecap breaker!

    • I had to get to London about 20 years ago this week, and the schedule was too tight to allow boat and train. The cheapest flight I could find was £400 with Aer Lingus. I’ll put up with a lot of sneers, baggage angst and sore knees to avoid going back to that situation.

      Last time I flew with that shower about 3 or 4 years ago they left us in the airport for about 8 hours with no info or staff there, and none of the EU passenger rights respected, e.g. food and drinks, information etc. We complained to the aviation authority and Ryanair LIED in their reply saying there was staff and information available to stranded passengers. You fly with these guys you come back from your trip more stressed than if you never got away in the first place. Haven’t flown with them since.

    • I have to disagree. Ryanair screwed up twice on me. Once where the flight coming in from Dublin was delayed by 3 hours (their fault) and I subsequently missed my connecting flight in Stansted. I had to incur all hotel costs etc plus I missed out on a day of my holidays. The second time they landed in Edinburgh instead of Aberdeen (due to adverse weather conditions) and left everybody to their own devices to get to Aberdeen. Their attitude to their customers is pathetic and I refuse to fly with them. People are outraged by some live animal export conditions, I would be too, if they flew Ryanair!

  • 2 out of 5 for value for money?? I live in London and just booked flights home in advance for next year. Spent under £150 in total on 6 flights. I consider that to be great value for money!

  • To be honest thomas he may be a gobshite but at the same time he is a genius. The ryanair business model is one of the best around and one that businesses focusing on low cost strategies should adhere to.

    If customers don’t like Ryanair don’t fly with Ryanair. I doubt Mr. O’Leary cares too much, each quarter of the year there seems to be a profit for the airline.

    • @dave To be fair, that’s not giving o’leary any credit. Having flown with southwest about 20 times this year, Boeing 737 apart, their business model has diverged greatly. Southwest don’t charge for non alcoholic drinks, don’t charge for baggage, dont charge for check in, the list goes on. The main difference is that you would never get a flight for less than $200. It’s low cost by American standards but expensive by european.

      Ryanair has revolutionized travel, for the better!!

      Sure, it has diverged, but the basics are the same. One aircraft type, high utilisation, sweating the assets. O’leary added the extra fees, and treatment of staff, and getting them to pay for their own training, id’s and uniforms. So be aware, Ryanair’s cabin staff are effectively subsidising that low fare!

    • It’s that very attitude of take it or leave that makes OLeary and his yellow – pack flights , a nasty way to travel.
      I’d have to agree with the 8000+ voters .i have moved to Aerlingus….. Cheap is not always better.

  • They’ll carry over 75 million passangers this year, Aerlingus will carry around 10million, Ba (the worlds favourite airline) Combined with Iberia 50ish million. Swiss international Air about 16million. Their popularity speaks for its self.

    I would reckon Ryanair sell more fares than Which magazine sell copies. If you dont like ryanair, dont fly with them. They changed the european industry from payin 400 irish pounds 20 years ago to get to london to headin over for 40. More power i say.

  • No love for O Leary or Ryan Aer but I thank him for bringing cheap travel to everybody in the country and not just the elite with money. He also managed to create more business for our country than the whole of the IDA and Enterprise Ireland put together. The Tourist industry should simply give him commission on his efforts. When he started his business he set up in 6 porta cabins out at the airport without any state support from taxpayers and at the same time the taxpayer bailed out DAA and Aer Lingus for 300 million pounds. Everybody wants to knock him yet if he were to take charge for 1 month our problems would be solved – again I think he is a good guy and have no connection in any way to his business or himself. I would not like to go to dinner with him – he seems a bit arrogant. Mind you so do our new TD’s.

  • Ryanair are glorified gangsters.if only people new how they treat there staff. For example putting them on forced unpaid leave just before Xmas and yet make extraordinary profits each year!!

    • I know Ryanair staff and they prefer the airline to others, as they are home to their family each night. Due to the bus style timetable of Ryanair.

      I always find it odd that non Ryanair staff seem to be the first to complain about the “conditions”. As if we don’t live in a free work market place.

    • No Joe, you know a few Ryanair CREW! There are more people off the aircraft working for that airline! And I’m assuming those crew you know are Pilots because they are on decent salaries. Because their cabin crew are actually hired, paid and employed by an agency and don’t technically work for Ryanair at all despite paying them for their training and uniform!!!!!

      Tony half of Ryanair pilots are also contract workers and don’t actually work for Ryanair either. Therefore a vast amount of Ryanair pilots are not paid a salary and are instead paid only when they are flying the aircraft. I know because I’m one of them. 11 hours work this month won’t pay the bills.

  • People just love to bash Ryanair. It’s is the best run airline in the world.

    It’s still cheaper to fly today with oil at $120 a barrel than it ever was by the European state monopoly airlines.

    If Ryanair was such a poor company they would have gone bust, but people fly on Ryanair by the tens of millions.

    If only CIE could learn a few things from Ryanair instead of losing €740 million a year!

  • I have to say, I fly Ryanair a lot. No choice really as it’s the only airline having a direct route to my region in France. I see in the article they only got 1 star out of 5 for boarding and I think it all depends which airport you’re travelling from. I never have any problems in Dublin, Ryanair staff always nice and helpful. The same in Brest where I always used to fly. Can’t say the same for Nantes airport where Ryanair staff are just plain rude. I had my child with me and of course the buggy and they told me either to check it in ( for free ) or take it to the boarding gate but warned me that there was no lift to go down to the tarmac. I said, that’s OK, I suppose somebody will help me. And the lady answered: No we’re not here for that !!! I hate flying Ryanair to Nantes but they’re not going to Brest anymore. Again, there’s no choice here, 375 euros for 2 adults and 2 kids going home for Christmas, AirFrance quoted me 1000 euros !!! So Ryanair is cheaper if you know when to book ( usually 6 to 8 weeks in advance) and follow their rules

  • I’ll admit I’ve flown Ryanair but only when it’s been unavoidable. I’ll gladly pay up more to fly anyone else unless we’re talking over 40 Euro (and going to the same airport not some bloody out of the way regional one ie: Prestwick instead of Glasgow). I HATE Ryanair. They treat both their passengers and their staff like crap and i managed to avoid flying them for over six years till i needed to get Aberdeen and no one else flew from Dublin.

    And can people please stop saying that “Michael O’Leary’s the man to save Ireland”. You think there have been cuts and hardships now!? You’d hate to see this country after he’s through with it. A country’s economy is not the same as a business. You’re not trying to make a profit, you’re trying to ensure that the people have as good a life as possible with the resources available. At least, that’s what it’s supposed to be like……..

  • The term “cheapest airline” and Ryanair don’t go together anymore. They are more expensive than Aer Lingus on any flight I’ve checked out over the last few years. For what? To be abused by staff? To be flown by pilots who are barely out of nappies. Air travel is strenuous enough without adding Ryanair to the equation.

    I don’t think anyone needs to trawl a blog to see that Ryanair is a very successful airline – not sure that’s being disputed in these results.

    i always liked the idea of charging for all extras – but i can’t understand how checking in has become an extra??

    also if anyone can explain to me why O’Leary feels the need to be such a gobshite or why people have to queue like cattle before the flight i’d love to hear it?

    and also they not as cheap as they were! not by half!

  • I recall initially this was the case, you would be a long time around to get a fare like that now , fair play to Aer Lingus they travel to destinations Ryanair travel to destinations that takes more time to get to the :destination

  • I wouldn’t have a lot of faith in this type of survey I think personalities may come into it. M O’Leary wouldn’t be held in very high esteem as he doesn’t suck up to the surveyors.

  • Some of the ‘best business models’ out there are pyramid, ponzi schemes and assorted scams. Rotten air is no different. I priced a flight Dub to London on rottenair in front of a brainless coworker to prove last time BMI €80, Ryanair €120 including fees and charges, flight booked two weeks in advance, same day and within an hour of each other. Only difference was to heathrow instead of gatwuck or stanstead and star alliance gold service all the way.

    Anyway looks like the airheads are finally coping on, aer lingus load is up and adding routes. Ryanair is down and they’re grounding planes

  • I think this is a biased report from which are they the bunch of snobs thta test things like toasters I always was treated well by ryanair and always on time found other airlines not as good another think you are charged extra if you dont read the rules regarding things like overweight baggage if you make this mistake its your fault and not theres.
