RTÉ HAS CONFIRMED details of its latest attempt at cracking the afternoon TV market – a show which will be broadcast live from Cork.
The ‘Today’ show, which will be hosted by the team of Dáithí Ó Sé, Maura Derrane, Bláithnaid Ní Chofaigh and Norah Casey, will include individual sponsored segments as well as an overall show sponsorship by Harvey Norman sofas.
Ó Sé and Derrane will host the programme between Mondays and Thursdays, while Ní Chofaigh and ‘Dragons Den’ panellist Casey – who only this week began another broadcasting job, co-hosting Newstalk’s ‘Breakfast’ show – will take command on Fridays.
RTÉ said the new show would “be a mix of the issues of the day, entertainment news, food, fashion and beauty, book clubs, health and well being, home and garden, consumer news and money management, parenting and kids, relationships and travel.”
Series editor Colm Crowley said the decision to move the show to the south meant RTÉ had “the opportunity to showcase the skills of the RTÉ Cork team and to introduce a unique perspective to the national conversation”.
RTÉ TV programming director Steve Carson said he believed viewers would be “quick to build a rapport” with the on-screen team.
The show is a successor to ‘Four Live’ and ‘The Daily Show’, both of which were cut “due to financial constraints” earlier this year. Derrane had hosted the former show, while Ó Sé had presented the latter with Claire Byrne, who more recently has been heard on RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland and News at One.
