RYANAIR HAS RAISED its profit forecast following figures for the last quarter of 2011 showing that it made a profit of almost €15 million with revenue rising to €844 million, a jump of 13 per cent on the same period in 2010.

Passenger numbers fell slightly in the three months to 31 December from 17 million to 16.7 million. There was also a 17 per cent rise in the low-cost airline’s average fare rise but fewer flights were cancelled due to the milder winter.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, O’Leary played down the comparisons with the fourth quarter of 2010 when there was widespread disruption caused by the weather: “I wouldn’t get too excited about the results this morning,” he said.

The airline said the increased cost of fares was due to reduced seat capacity, longer sectors, and higher competitor fares and fuel surcharges.

However the unexpected profits were attributed to the grounding of 80 of the airline’s 270 planes over the winter period due to higher fuel costs.

A forecasted €350m increase in its fuel bill next year “poses a significant cost challenge,” O’Leary said but Ryanair stated that it now expected its full year profit will exceed previous guidance of €440m and will rise to €480m.

    • It’s my opinion and I used the jacket as an example of the type of person he is. However, if all you have to contribute is grammatically very poor and vague life advice then that is your perogative.

  • I use them to Liverpool Leeds as have no choice but I learnt very quickly turn up plenty time obey hand baggage rules book priority seat it is no frills but it does exactly what it says in advert
My only concern is that two people up front know what they are doing forget the rest.
Might not be pretty but it works and in our country where so much does not work it’s refreshing

I fly ryanair over aer lingus any day. They are always on time and no bull or crap “free” food. Pay for a sandwich if you want it, etc. I don’t know why so many people complain about them and still use them.

    • Ya you get what you pay for and in fairness if I pay €25 for a return flight I don’t expect much.

    • Probably because they are lying con merchants , but sure don t let that get in the way. While I don t defend BMI or Aer Lingus they usually beat Ryanair o. Price when all is added up.

    • I couldn’t agree more. Drives me up the wall when you see people at the airport giving out to staff, holding up the queue trying to bring on a rucksack as hand luggage. Jaysus, just read your boarding pass and pack like everyone else.

Also Ivor, I always shop around, often flying return flights with 2 different airlines, and ryanair is rarely beaten on price (including airport transfer). I’m aware that my defense of Ryanair paints me as some brand enthusiast sort but it’s a good business model providing a affordable service to its customers, no? Why the perpetual moaning?

@thomas. I was talking about flying in general there. you always get crap food slapped in front of you on long haul for example. I was making the point that user pays is a better system.

  • Why the constant knocking of Ryanair by some commentators,if you don’t like Ryanair don’t fly with them its not like your business will be missed.Get over yourselves and grow up.

    • Like I said before…its an opinion, just like yours.

If you don’t like other people’s opinions then don’t read these threads or contribute to them. Then you won’t have to keep telling people to “grow up” or “get over themselves”.

      Problem solved.

    • @Grant what is your opinion on Ryanair based on, you stated earlier you would never fly with them so i’m curious to know where your coming from.

    • Norman,

Like everybody else here I am entitled to an opinion. I don’t see that as childish but more my basic human right.

My opinion on RyanAir is based upon a number of things including personal experience of their “service”, Michael O’Leary’s comments/diatribe and the experience of a close friend of mine who worked directly for him for a good number of years.

When I did fly RyanAir I felt like I had been conned as the amount of restrictions and add ons from a cost perspective made it just as expensive as other airlines that provided a better experience. When you went to complain all you got was indifference and rudeness.

Mostly I do not like O’Leary’s attitude that “I am the biggest airline in the world so everyone has to listen to me”. He is an ignoramus of the highest order who has no respect for anyone and only likes the sound of his own voice. I do understand that he has created this public persona for himself but it is wholeheartedly revolting and I have no wish to line his pockets.

    • How were you conned did you not read the terms and conditions.I’m still confused your earlier post said you would never fly with Ryanair, now your saying you did so which is it.To human right to an opinion fully agree with on that point, but your earlier point was at odds to your opinion on a service you stated you would never use that is where my confusion emanated from.

    • Norman,

My apologies my earlier post may have ommitted the word “again”. I have flown with them hence my position.

As for reading terms and conditions, I do read them generally, especially when it comes to airlines. The terms are not the issue it is the way the service is delivered. RyanAir always look to advertise extremely cheap flights, when in reality they are not cheap due to the charges levied if you wish to do anything other than carry the smallest bag possible and be treated like cattle.

In the austere times we live I can completely understand why people would use RyanAir for short trips as long as they are prepared for the distinct lack of service. I am not prepared to do that and have found that if I use BMI or Aer Lingus it works out just as inexpensive and I don’t have to deal with all of the unecessary hassle of RyanAir or be dropped at an airport that is 40 miles from where I want to be.

Also if I am going to pay for something and I am not happy with what was provided I don’t expect to have someone be rude or dismissive of me when I bring it up. Customer experience is the only differentiator that I have between service providers to guage the value I am getting from that service provider and my RyanAir experience was less than satisfactory.

  • Disgusting little man, with the manners of a goat and the sole reason I will never fly RyanAir.

I had a friend who worked for him and he was that cheap he even borrowed other peoples jackets off the backs of their chairs.

  • Thanks for the clarification.Lack of service don’t understand, you pay to be transported to your destination they transport you.O’Leary has made it quite clear all he wants people to do is turn up with a small cabin bag, booked in online ready to go.There is no hidden charges, before you click on pay you are given the final price.Lastly i never heard Ryanair claim to be the biggest airline in the world, you seem to have an issue with Ryanair that so far you have failed to justify.
