Paddy Power to create 600 jobs in Dublin by 2015

Hundreds of positions will be created as part of the bookmaker’s international online expansion.

THE TAOISEACH IS to announce the creation of 600 new jobs at the official opening of bookmaker Paddy Power’s new headquarters in Clonskeagh, Dublin, later today.

The announcement will bring to 800 the number of jobs recently announced by the group – almost 200 of which have already been filled.

The positions to be announced later this morning will be in areas such as e-commerce, technology, social media, quantitative research, risk management and online marketing and will support Paddy Power’s “international online expansion”, the company said. All new jobs will be filled by the end of 2015.

The group has reported strong international online growth in recent years, allowing it to expand into the UK, Australia and Italy.

Paddy Power currently employs 2,172 people in Ireland.

The new jobs announced today are being created without the requirement of investment support from the State.

I hear Kenny is cutting a ribbon to the paddy towers today? So let’s get this straight…We are celebrating a gambling company that only adds misery to families and gambling addicts?? Gambling is a MUGS game.

that is a ridiculous comment. This company will employ almost 3000 people in Ireland after this expansion. the vast majority of its customers enjoy an occasional bet and are not addicted. you must be delighted to see all the pubs closing around the country to protect those with alcohol problems

    jobs for people is great,

However, the misery that gambling causes needs to be remembered too, these are far from good quality jobs and shouldn’t really be celebrated

I never came across a person that was forced to gamble. People make choices. Paddy power provides a service much like a pub or the lotto. Fair play to the company.

    @Martin Mac

I have to agree with you. I am finding it very hard to accept that this is a good thing. Too many young people are gampling on line and also I see a lot of them hanging around the local betting offices. This can’t be good. I really don’t think this is something positive or to be proud of Mr. Kenny. The one person smiling with this news, are the owners.

Surveys will always show that in the main, people lose all the time with gambling. Yes, I know, they are supposedly adults, but so are people that take drugs, smoke, drink and drive. People with low willpower will always lose.

The Kerry Group announced jobs and not many people lashed out at the “misery” created by eating high-fat foods and developing heart disease and obesity! Bookmakers are in the entertainment industry, there’s nothing sinister about what they do. The bet you put on a football match isn’t free but either is a ticket to the game or a subscription to Sky. And in any case, practically all bookmakers offer the facility of deposit limits and permanent closure. All companies try to make money from their customers; whether it’s Paddy Power or a supermarket.

For Christ’s sake, this is good news. Gambling destroys some lives but so do pubs, breweries etc and nobody gives out about them. There’s nothing wrong with gambling in moderation, there’ll always be a few who take it too far but the same is true of any activity that people can get hooked on.

This is good news. But not wanting to put a spanner in the works, these jobs all relate to its on line expansion. The days of the high street bookie are numbered, resulting invariably in job losses in that sector of the gambling industry.

There are more gambling ads on tv than drink add. Pity we are going from bad to worse. Gambling is much worse an addiction than drink. Yet it is legal. It should be taxed at a much higher rate than normal taxation. The lottery is played by people in the lower socio economic bracket (over 80 %) which tends to show that the better educated you are the less likely you are to gamble. Again it is the less well off and the vulnerable that seem hardest hit in life. Traditionally men gambled away the family money but a lot of women are now gambling and are targeted by the marketing people for the bookies.

while I don’t condone gambling this is a big achievement for a Irish company to get ahead using technology. if paddy power wasn’t expanding it would be UK & US companies filling this slot.
well done creating 600 new jobs and I’m sure the government is happy with additional revenue this Irish company generates.

Internet gambling is the unbridled, unscrupulous and ruthless exploitation of the weak and vulnerable. It is driven by the greed of rich men in a largely unregulated environment.
Operators exploit “grey areas” and loopholes to circumvent national gambling laws in order to rake in huge, tax free profits.
It leads to untold misery for families and has proven to lead to addiction, depression and suicide. It should be universally outlawed immediately.
I am sick of being spammed and bombarded by these shoddy, shameless, smarmy and tawdry pop-up ads on all forms of social media.
