One in five plan to shop for Christmas over the border - survey

Of those surveyed by Irish travel company GoHop.ie, 70 per cent said they would be shopping in the Republic this Christmas.

A NEW SURVEY by an Irish online travel company has found that 70 per cent of people are planning to do their Christmas shopping within Ireland this year, while one in five say they will go to Northern Ireland.

Over 180 people were surveyed by GoHop.ie to find out where in the world they intend to source their gifts this festive season.

Of the survey’s respondents, 4 per cent said they plan to shop in London, 3 per cent said Christmas markets in Europe and 2 per cent said New York.

Irish consumers are expected to be the highest spenders again this Christmas, with households predicted to spend €943 on average, slightly down from €1,020 last year, according to Deloitte. In comparison, Dutch households are expected to spend an average of €260 over Christmas.

Just over half (55 per cent) of Irish spending is expected to go on gifts, with food and socialising accounting for the rest.

Recent figures from the Irish League of Credit Unions suggest that one in three people will go into debt due to their Christmas spending.
