Number of women directors increased by 20% during recession

Almost 100,000 women are now directors of Irish companies, an increase of almost 50 per cent in the past ten decade.

ALMOST 100,000 WOMEN are now directors of Irish companies, an increase of one-fifth since the start of the recession.

A total of 99,915 directors of Irish companies are women, compared to 84,370 in 2007 and just 43,282 a decade ago, according to figures released by business and credit risk analyst Vision-net.

The total number of Irish company directors is 317,808.

Almost two-thirds of women directors are in their 40s, while 23 per cent are in their 50s. Just 4 per cent are in their 20s. The most common name for Irish women directors is Mary.

The figures were released to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Christine Cullen, the managing director of Vision-net said the figures show that Irish women are increasingly taking up company directorships as the number of people starting their own businesses has increased during the recession.
