Nokia unveils new handsets as smartphone war continues

The Finnish manufacturer ‘shifts into high gear’ to fight back against growing dominance from Apple and Blackberry.

NOKIA HAS UNVEILED three new high-end smartphone models in a new salvo in the company’s ongoing war for dominance of the growing and lucrative market.

The new handsets include the E7, a business-focused device, the more consumer-friendly C7, and a revamped version of the C6 – all three featuring the manufacturer’s own Symbian^3 operating system.

The Finnish manufacturer also launched its new flagship N8 handset, billed as “the ultimate entertainment smartphone and the world’s best camera phone” complete with a 12-megapixel camera. Nokia claims it has received a record number of pre-orders for the phone.

All three of the phones will be available for Christmas.

“We haven’t been as competitive as we want to be in smartphones. That’s about to change,” said Niklas Savender of Nokia at the launch event in London. “Today, we shift into high gear in Nokia’s fight back in smartphone leadership.”

Although the manufacturer’s handsets required for 24% of all devices sold in the world in the second quarter of the year, Nokia has still been seen to lose ground to competitors from Apple, HTC, Samsung and Research in Motion.

Research firm comScore say Nokia’s share of the smartphone market has fallen by 14% in the past year, though it is still holds the majority of the market in most of Europe.

Nokia claims to sell 260,000 smartphones around the world every day.
