NZ paper uses photo of Jackass star Ryan Dunn in place of dead Israeli soldier

The paper apologised after they took the wrong photo from the soldier’s Facebook.

A NEW ZEALAND NEWSPAPER has apologised after it published a photograph of the deceased Jackass star Ryan Dunn in place a photograph of a dead Israeli soldier.

The New Zealand Herald’s lead story on Monday,  ’Kiwi killed in Gaza’, was about the death of soldier Guy Boyland who’s mother is Israeli and father is a New Zealander.

The paper however used a photograph of Dunn, who died in a car crash in 2011 instead of that of Boyland.

Later that day it was forced to “apologise unreservedly” to Boyland’s family and friends after the paper was made aware of their error.

The incorrect pictures were used both in print and online versions with editor Shane Currie explaining in an apology that they were taken from Boyland’s Facebooke page by mistake:

Guy Boyland was a fan of comedian Ryan Dunn and had posted the photo we used on his Facebook page when the comedian died in 2011. The New Zealand Herald incorrectly sourced the image of Ryan Dunn from Guy’s page, along with several other images, believing them to be of Guy.

Currie also wrote that he has spoken to the the family of Boyland and said that they have been “remarkably forgiving” in the circumstances.
