New pop-up restaurant offers Dublin diners a different taste

Quirky once-off restaurant Crackbird offers ‘tweetseats’ to Twitter followers.

YOU’VE HEARD OF popcorn chicken – now Dublin will have its own pop-up chicken restaurant.

Called Crackbird, it’s the brainchild of Dublin entrepreneur Joe Macken, who owns the hugely popular Jo’Burger restaurant in Rathmines, Dublin.

Joe told TheJournal.ie he had decided to bring free food to the masses as a thank-you to his Jo’Burger customers – and also to show that it’s time to “get off our arses” and do something positive.

“I wanted to do something different,” explained Joe. “It will run over 12 weeks and it’s a pop-up restaurant that will be based at 19 Crane Lane in Temple Bar. It’s a cool space, we’re doing minimal work to it but it will have a casual vibe, like Jo’Burger.”

The restaurant will serve chicken dishes such as skillet-fried buttermilk chicken (€9.95). “It takes 20 minutes to cook and all the food is cooked from scratch,” said Joe. “We want to use as many Irish ingredients, from small independent companies, as we can.”

What makes Crackbird special is that you can book your table using your Twitter account - and each #tweetseats diner is entitled to a free meal of one main chicken dish per person, a shared side and a shared dip on their first visit.

Just tweet your name, plus a date and whatever amount of people you need a booking for, to @CrackBIRDdublin, using the hashtag #tweetseats.

If seats are available for you, the restaurant will tweet you back to confirm. There are 36 seats for Twitter reservations and the remaining 54 are first come, first served. The restaurant will sit seven days a week from midday to midnight.

“This isn’t just for hipsters, or for kids, or for people on Twitter - this is for everyone,” said Joe, who said he wants to “give  back” with Crackbird and was inspired to feed people like his own friends who are unemployed and feeling the strain of the recession.

Crackbird will open at 19 Crane Lane in Temple Bar, Dublin, on 21 February. For more details, follow @CrackBIRDdublin
