National Employment Week gets underway in Dublin

The conference will hear from cabinet ministers and employment stakeholders over the next few days.

NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT WEEK (NEW) is getting underway in Dublin with the conference aiming to provide a platform for debate on the future of employment in Ireland.

The conference, being held at the Dublin Conference Centre, will last from today until Friday.

It will hear from three cabinet ministers including Jobs Minister Richard Bruton, Social Protection Minister Joan Burton, Health Minister James Reilly over the course of the week.

There will be numerous other speakers as the forum aims to discuss the major social and economic issues surrounding the Irish labour market.

NEW is billed as a “a unique opportunity for employment leaders and decision makers to engage in a high-level debate” on employment in Ireland.

The incoming chair of the event, Robert Mac Giolla Phádraig, said that the conference provided “a platform for all stakeholders, from Government to private industry, to come together to highlight and discuss the various issues.”

“Employment, or more specifically unemployment, is a hugely topical issue at the moment with record numbers on the Live Register and the Government struggling to effectively address the issue with various action plans and initiatives,” he said.

Mac Giolla Phádraig said that there will be “significant jobs announcements” made as well as new training initiatives announced.

“An international trade mission will also be launched where leaders from private industry will travel abroad in an effort to help and support the foreign direct investment efforts of the IDA,” he added.
