FOR THOSE WHO like the idea of Chromecast, streaming content to their TV via a USB stick, but don’t want to invest in Google products, an alternative could be on the way.

Mozilla, most famed for its web browser Firefox, is said to be working on its own streaming stick.

With the focus being on openness, the stick is powered by Mozilla’s HTML5-based Firefox OS and is capable of running a number of apps from Chromecast,

Currently, the device doesn’t have either a name or a release date yet, but the focus will be on openness. GigaOM is reporting that developers will be able to code apps for multiple platforms, meaning that apps designed for Windows Phone and Firefox OS could also include casting capabilities.

A streaming stick is part of Mozilla’s attempts to get into the TV streaming market. Earlier in the year, the company announced a partnership with Panasonic to develop smart TVs powered by Firefox OS.

It’s not clear how involved Mozilla is in the development of this device or the company that’s developing it.
