HOMEGROWN BRANDS HAVE been filling our shopping baskets once again this year, with three Irish products in the top 5 of the 2014 Top 100 Brands.
Published this morning, the annual report shows that Coca-Cola is Ireland’s best-selling brand for the 10th year running, followed by Avonmore and Brennans.
Rounding out the best-sellers is Cadbury Dairy Milk and Tayto crisps, in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Here are the Top 20 Brands in your shopping bags this year:
4. Cadbury Dairy Milk
11. Wrigley’s Extra
13. Irish Pride
15. Club (Soft Drinks)
17. Pat The Baker
18. Denny (Sliced Meat)
The list, published by Checkout Magazine and consumer research company Nielsen, shows a clear winner in terms of what we throw into our shopping baskets most.
Sweets and chocolate are the most popular products, with 12 confectionary brands in the Top 100, followed by milk, bread, fizzy drinks, and biscuits.
So this is us, pretty much…
Averaging out the Top 10 from the last decade, it looks like we’re actually a really boring lot – Coca-Cola has been most popular for 10 years in a row, Avonmore has been #2 for the last six years, and Brennans in third place for five years.
Outside the top 20, though, there have been some movers and shakers over the last 12 months.
Kinder confectionery has shot up 21 places to 35th, Maltesers are up 19 places to 36th, Volvic bottled water is up seven to 40th, Deep River Rock is up nine to 42nd, and HB Magnum is up to 44th from 58th in 2013.
Falling out of favour with the Irish shopper is Denny sliced meat, down five to 18th, Goodfella’s pizza, down eight to 25th, Knorr Soup, down nine to 47th, and Weetabix, down from #42 to #56.
Let’s cut to the chase – Lyons or Barry’s?
Over the years, this debate has caused more division in Irish society than The Treaty and Saipan combined.
And although the question of which is best has been comprehensively (and very scientifically) resolved, this year’s list clearly shows which is more popular.
For the fifth year in a row, it’s Lyons, which ranks at #24, way down from #16 last year, but still a few spots ahead of Barry’s which comes in at #28 in the most popular brands.
When it comes to our vices, there’s a new king of beers in town – with Heineken this year leading the Top 50 Alcohol Brands for the first time.
Smirnoff vodka is the most popular spirit among Irish drinkers, keeping Jameson whiskey in second place for the fifth year in a row.
Blossom Hill comes out on top in the wines category, ahead of the Chilean brand Santa Rita
Our favourite cigarette brand? Silk Cut, for the fifth year in a row, beating Benson & Hedges into second place.
