Irish company signs major 3D printing deal with Staples

Staples will offer 3D printing using the Iris printing machine, developed by Co Louth company Mcor Technologies.

AN IRISH COMPANY based in Co Louth has signed a deal with the printing and office supplies company Staples to provide 3D printing services.

Mcor Technologies has created the Iris printing machine, which it says is able to print affordable 3D models. This machine will be used by Staples to provide 3D printing at its stores.

The company confirmed to TheJournal.ie that it had struck the deal, and that representatives are currently in Germany for trade show Euromold, where the announcement was made today.

Mcor Technologies was formed by brothers Dr Conor MacCormack and Fintan MacCormack in 2005.

Wired reports that Staples will offer a service called ‘Staples Easy 3D’, where customers can upload their designs to Staples’ website and then pick up the objects at their local Staples, or have them delivered.

According to Wired, Staples will introduce the service in the Netherlands and Belgium first, before moving on to other countries.

Here is a video from Mcor showing how their 3D printer, which prints and glues the objects using paper, works:

3d printing really is bringing us into the Star Trek generation. I’ve seen some items printed in 3d and they were amazing.

If you have an interest in this technology check out this video of a bunch of engineers who printed a bicycle and actually rode it.

I would like to see a video of the final part of cutting your printed model out of the paper block. That looks a bit tricky.

What price per sq cm will it be?

Still good to see an Irish company doing do well, well done.
