No agreement but bank debt deal talks will continue, Ministers insist

Leo Varadkar and Pat Rabbitte have both insisted that the discussions on reducing the burden of Ireland’s bank debt will continue despite a report that the ECB had rejected a key Irish government proposal.

TWO GOVERNMENT MINISTERS have insisted that talks with the European Central Bank (ECB) to reach a deal to reduce Ireland’s bank debt will continue despite a report that the ECB had ruled out a key Irish proposal.

The Reuters news agency reported yesterday that the ECB had ruled out the prospect of Ireland issuing a long-term government bond as a replacement for the promissory notes given to the former Anglo Irish Bank, citing EU treaties.

The government has spent months seeking a deal to write-down the cost of the promissory notes which as presently constituted will mean that the State pays €3.1 billion every year for the next ten years with the next payment due on 31 March.

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte told RTÉ Radio’s Marian Finucane programme, that there was “no basis” for the Reuters report and said that discussions were ongoing.

“It is not the case that the discussions have concluded… the discussions are going on but I believe they will be concluded and they will be concluded before the 31 March,” he said.

His government colleague, Transport Minister Leo Varadkar, acknowledged later on The Week in Politics on RTÉ television that there was no agreement reached as yet between Ireland and the ECB’s governing council.

“They weren’t rejected, there was no breakdown but there certainly isn’t an agreement yet,” he said.

Varadkar said there had been some issues that needed to be worked and said that government was still hopeful of a resolution that would mean Ireland avoided paying out €3.1 billion at the end of March.

“There was no rejection, there was no breakdown [in talks with the ECB]. There are issues that need to be changed, and issues that need to be agreed on,” he told the programme.

Meanwhile, the Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said that the government was “spinning” the discussion on a bank debt deal on an “ongoing basis, usually without substance.”

He said that the government should tell European partners that it will not pay the promissory notes – a move that many would view as being tantamount to a sovereign default.

“This debt is Fianna Fáil’s legacy to the Irish people. It is not our debt. It is a hangover from the days of the golden circles,” the Louth TD said in a statement.

“The main plank of our negotiation should be that we cannot pay the promissory note. That should be the basis of our negotiations with the ECB.”

It’s really simple: Not renegotiated, not restructed, not converted into another type of loan that we will have to repay anyway, not postponed, not extended, just NOT FÙCKING PAID. End of story, there is not one citizen in this country, outside of the government seats in Kildare Street, who belives that this is our (the Irish taxpayers), debt to pay. Refuse to pay it and whatever the consequences, we’ll deal with them. 3 billion a year until 2023, go fúck yourselves if you think that we are going to further impoverish prople any further to pay that for you, YOU made a bad punt, so YOU deal with it, not our problem, have a pint and get over it, you win some you lose some.

Given that position doesn’t your criticism of the ECB seem just a little bit silly! Could you imagine under such an idea that Jackie Healy Rea might run for Governor?

They’ll never learn to keep their mouths shut and to stop promising things they are not sure they can deliver. All of the favourable rates on Irish bonds have had the expectation of this deal built in…if this does fall apart Kenny, Gilmore et al will carry the blame for ever.

John, We need to stop talking and start using our DEMOCRATIC Right to protest. The problem with this country is that there are so many armchair commentators here that nothing will ever get done and the Government knows this. The ECB and IMF have one agenda and that is to Bankrupt us, and the worst thing is, the Government knows this and still continue to sleep with every one of them. I for one will stand up and deliver and take the power from these Liars at a moments notice.

Neither the IMF not the ECB want to bankrupt us. They’re not that stupid. If they bankrupt Ireland, Ireland can’t pay back the bail-out loans and that hurts everyone. It has been said again and again at the European level that public sector salaries ( this includes TDs and ministers ) must be brought into line with eurozone norms before effective negotiation has taken place. The Irish government refuse to do this, so No Deal. It can’t be said that the IMF and the ECB have been duplicitous; they’ve pretty much stuck to their guns the whole time. The only surprising thing is that people are acting surprised, and that is duplicitous. The Irish government knows what they have to do to secure a deal, and they’re choosing not to do it. But they’re not being honest with their announcements to the Irish public.

You bought into the bankruptcy of your nation when you voted to maximize your own financial gain. Did you vote for a public representative who would cut back your “entitlements”? @ Clark – if “everyone” knows abut the Bilderburger Group then it’s hardly secret, is it? The Builderburger Group is an organisation that arranges regular meeting between the wealthy and powerful; essentially politicians and business leaders. If you see this as conspiracy, when you have to see the G8 meetings as a conspiracy also, albeit with a more restricted membership. Extend it out; a cabinet meet of a government, any government, must also be a conspiracy. Doctor-patient confidentiality enables conspiracy.

Let’s face it, the main reason that a certain kind of person believes in conspiracy theories is that they are not as wealthy, powerful and influential in their world as the believe they should be, and the belief that they delibrately being kept down by a cabal of “shadowy rulers” with hidden agendas is far easier on the ego than the more truthful “you’re not as wonderful as you think you are” or “life is unfair, them’s the breaks”.

The world operates on selfishness and self-interest at all levels. The Bilderburger group is just a larger version of a middle-class estate’s resident’s committee, seeking to make their environment as good for themselves as possible. That’s not a conspiracy. That’s just the world. And chances are, the type of person who rails against this type of administration isn’t angry because it’s unjust, they’re angry because they haven’t been asked to join.

Incompetant humans run the world, not occultists, satanist or reptilian shape-changers. The euro-crisis and the sloppy, disorganized to resolve the crisis, are far more a proof that there is no worldwide conspiracy than a proof that there is one.

I’ll give you kudos for not mentioning the “sly Jews who manipulate the masses”, but please be aware that the “New World Order” thesis will always fundamentally lead to that; a justification for anti-semitism, which is the intent behind the NWO thesis in the first place.

Why is it that National Media never actually report behind the reporting. Effectively what you in the journal do is much the same as Huff Post. Find some “facts” from a pre written story, write a story and promote it and whatever the people read they believe right. WRONG.. when did journalists lose true journalism, ie finding facts within the facts and digging deeper for a more informed story.

As we own all major media corporations who author the stories, your local media just repeat what we feed them. We pay the owners well and give them secret titles. Keep reading our false information, this is the only information you need.

You own nothing, but your facts are correct, I know this and many do too

Clark, there is no such thing as investigative journalism now. All copy and paste. But I will commend the journal on the leaks they had a few days back. Occasionally get a bit of a journalist trying to get to the truth, but more often than not, it’s copy and paste. Dig deeper, read between the lines, read from multiple sources and you may piece a few bits together.

That is not what is really happening. If we were really being oppressed by foreigners the solution would be easy. But no, it’s just smoke and mirrors, a distraction to prevent the Irish sheepies from realizing we’re being skrewed by our own.
